The Ladies of Horror

Exestential Breakdown
by A.F. Stewart

Tick tock, Davy. Tick tock. Listen, listen. Hear the clocks?
“Please, no. Not again.” A small whimper in the night.
‘Round and ‘round your brain they go. Where it stops, we all know.
“I won’t listen this time. I won’t!” Quick breaths in and out. The urge to clamp his hands over his ears. “Just leave me alone! I won’t do it!”
Of course you will. You love the thrill. Clocks are ticking, the road awaits. Past time to eviscerate.
“You can’t make me do it this time!”
Oh, Davy, Davy, can’t we? Look my boy, what do you see?
He didn’t want to see the visions, but they were there. He didn’t want to answer. But he did. “The world painted sepia. Like an old photograph. The dirt road to nowhere and somewhere, lost in fog and eternal black.”
What else, what else? What do you hear? Let your reality disappear.
“The clocks. I hear the clocks. And the drip, drip of…”
Tears and blood. The weeping flood.
“Please, don’t do this.” A lost plea, echoing his footsteps.
Silly boy, you’re just our toy. Time to jaunt. What do you want?
One soft sigh. “Colour. I want colour.” He felt it now and started running. He ran forever. He ran from himself and toward the voices.
Look down, look down. In your wish you’ll drown.
Eyelids fluttered in descent, to stare. “Red. My hands are all red.”
Red means dead. We’ve had our fun, now we’re done.
“I’ve killed again, haven’t I?”
Yes, Davy, dear. They screamed in fear.

The Ladies of Horror

Piggy, Piggy
by Mary Ann Peden-Coviello

“Honestly, Margo, how can you let her eat so much candy? She’s becoming quite the little porker.” My model-slim, bitter-tongued Aunt Patricia never bothered to hide her disdain for me.
“She sneaks it. She locks herself in her room with all those books and reads and eats all day. I’m at my wits’ end.”
I ignored Aunt Patricia and Mama, just as I ignored my cousins who thundered through the house, yelling, “Hey, it’s Bookworm Bessie!”  But that night, when Aunt Patricia and all the cousins began calling, “Oh, Piggy, Piggy!” every time I moved, my heart pinged, and everything changed.
I stopped eating. Not entirely, of course. Late at night, when the house was snoring, I’d creep downstairs and eat a bite of cereal or a piece of toast. Something no one would miss. Something I could hide.
And I devoured all the books. I’d curl up in my bed and live as a princess in a high tower or a knight slaying a dragon. Sometimes I was the dragon who slew the knight.
Oddly enough, no one noticed when I began losing weight. I just faded away. July had come with its swim meets, and my older brother was a competitive swimmer. He sucked up all the attention. In my family of bright, loud people, no one missed my shadow.
One morning, I lay on my bed and read a story about a shepherd girl and her loving family. My bedroom drifted away. I never noticed when I lost my grip on the real world and slid into the sunlit meadows of the novel.
The open book fell onto the bed, right through the space where my heart used to be.
In the flowery meadows, I trail behind the lambs. And no one calls me Piggy.

Negative Space
by Suzanne Madron

“Are you connected?”
“To what?” he asked. He didn’t take his eyes off the curling mist emerging from where the ocean had once been. What had started out as a walk along the beach had become much more complicated in a matter of minutes.
“Anything.”
“I suppose we’re all connected in some way. To something.”
“To everything.”
He nodded. “Yes, that, too.”
“Does it scare you?”
“Mmm?”
Still he watched the cloud of vapor, unable or unwilling to pull his gaze from it. It curled over the rocks, turning them wet and shiny black, polishing them before moving on. Toward him.
“Does what scare me?”
“The negative space.”
He squinted, searching his memories for where he knew the term. It seemed to fit in this situation, yet not fit at all. “I’m not afraid.”
He could feel a disapproving glance at his back and he winced. Something shifted in the mist. At first tendrils like reaching fingers pushed upwards, followed by larger columns of shapeless exploration. You are afraid, something said from the swirling cloud.
“Should I be afraid?” His voice shook as he said the words, as the mist swirled closer, now reaching toward him.
“Why are you afraid?”
“I’m not.”
A sigh from behind him and a tired chuckle. “All right, then. Of what are you afraid?”
He opened his mouth to answer, then shut it, considering. The mist paused, waiting for him to speak. Try as he might, he couldn’t move.
“I’m afraid of what I’ll see when I turn around.”
“And you fear what is before you.”
He nodded and swallowed hard as the mist began to swirl upward. The columns took on shape, a head, arms, legs. Everything told him to run before the mist could finish its becoming, but he was too terrified to turn around.
When the first being emerged, the spell holding him to the spot was at last broken. He turned and started to run, ignoring the laughter that echoed off the polished rocks. The owner of the voice appeared momentarily startled as he ran toward him, but only for a moment.
The intent had been to push the speaker out of his way, but instead he ran straight into him…. And through him.
He was already dispersing to the ocean winds as the speaker turned. As the man faced him, he was nothing more than wisps of fog. On the next breeze, he was a memory of negative space, a place where a person might once have stood before being returned to the mist.

The Ladies of Horror

Cinder Gypsies Dancing
by Marge Simon

In his eyes a universe, brown embers slumbering among the flames. He confounds me, so few wonders in this world. There he sits, hand on chin, staring into the grate.
How many times have I asked his thoughts on nights like this? How many times has he evaded my questions?
There is a covenant
among the gypsies, evasive
as flickering shadows,
they speak in tongues –
He mumbles things like this while his mind is transfixed with the flames. The glow of our winter hearth has become his escape since he was laid off. I suppose I should be grateful that he hasn’t joined his mates in the tavern. They’ve no more to squander on the spirits than do we, but still they go. And still they fight, so I’m told.
“Who are you talking to?” I say, setting the tea tray down. I fill his cup, add a drop of cream.
Bracelets jangle
shatter the perfect silence
eyes like pewter,
dance on, my beauties
“Who is she this time?”, I ask. My fingers trace the curved arms of my grandfather’s favorite chair. It is my chair now. It is the only thing I own that I won’t surrender in this marriage.
Lovely Esmeralda,
lithe daughter of night and moon,
a fallen virgin …
“You wouldn’t understand,” he says.
She comes nude to my bed
and with warm hair and mouth
folds in on me …
Tonight I see his gypsy, her hair in whorls of gold and violet. I watch until she vanishes in the smoke. When he dozes off, I adjust his shawl before I go with taper to an empty bed where once we lay together. I know he’s resting peacefully, all his pretty fancies dancing in the flames.
A fireplace to be cleared tomorrow. Would that I could have my own fantasies, if only I’d given my virtue to that soldier lad I’d loved so long ago.

The Ladies of Horror

Glacial Fire
by Julianne Snow

The surface was like glass above my face—unbroken and serene as I sunk slowly into the depths. A moment before it was riotous with ripples, my hands breaking the surface as my lungs fought the ice forming within. I know it was water, but the glacial chill of it heightened my nerves like fire only in the exact opposite way.
Once my mind was consumed with that singular thought—what does one call an icy coldness that burns with the ferocity of fire—it was over. My limbs cramped, crystals forming along the strands of my muscles. My lungs stopped taking in the bitterly frozen liquid; the lack of precious air stiffening my body further.
But my brain still worked on, its last puzzle the only thing keeping the exploratory fingers of frigidity from taking me completely. Through my eyes I could see the hoarfrost forming on my lashes, the ends of my long hair swirling about me, each strand struggling to maintain fluidity in the sub-zero depths.
In a moment, I stopped moving completely, both in space and time. My brain ceased to think of my question in an instant, the answer coming to me quickly and assuredly, as certainly as my body lay suspended in the freezing combination of liquid and ice. My body so cold, it was on fire…

The Ladies of Horror

Magenta Dreams
by A.F. Stewart

Have you ever walked through the place of nightmares?
I have.
It’s beautiful, all midnight violet and stillness stretching across an indistinct horizon. A land of indigo woods and an amethyst haze, nestled in ethereal mist woven from stygian secrets.
It shifts along the unconscious, against the thought boundaries of the sleeping.
I can hear them, you know, the ones asleep. Like whispering voices at the edge of the trees.
They don’t know I’m here. They’re too busy dreaming sugarplums and bright happy wishes. They never look deeper.
They never learned to walk through other people’s dreams.
I started at thirteen, a jaunt past my own haunting fears about school and bullies, into a surreal fantasy with clowns and upside down ice cream cones drenched in scarlet rain. After that, I’d wander every night, a salacious voyeur into other people’s private dreams, and then their shuddering nightmares.
That’s how I found my orchid hued sanctuary, this imprisoned oasis. This vision in dark violet where all the underbelly horror lives. The black thoughts, the dark deeds, the furtive desires lurking underneath those sugarplums. All the ideas we don’t dare voice aloud.
It felt like home. It’s where I came to live, after…
And it’s where I made my decision to set them all free.
Tonight, I let the nightmares of the human race loose. Show them the path to escape.
That will be fun. They’ll ooze out from slumbering eyes and breathing noses, spew from throats, past groaning hypocrite lips, consuming their way into reality. They’ll leave behind hollow husks and empty shells, a legacy of dead dreamers. And best of all, as they’ll turn the world mauve and indigo and shivers, they’ll take me with them.
And I can finally wake up.

The Ladies of Horror

Mated
by Bailey Hunter

“I’m really sorry Sam.” Kali threw a pebble into the misty waters.
“You’re such a bitch, Kali.  You said we’d go together.”
“Look, I said I’m sorry.  How was I supposed to know you’d leave without me? What kind of boyfriend does that?” Kali tried to match Sam’s angry tone, but it came out weak, sounding more sad than anything.
“You’re right. I could have waited.” Sam’s voice softened. “I should have waited.”
“I’m here now though.  I’m really glad you came back for me. I was worried I would never see you again.” Kali removed her bright red windbreaker and dropped it to the shoreline.
“I could never really leave you behind. We made a promise. But you better hurry. Tide’s rolling out and you don’t want to miss it this time.”
“I’m coming!” Kali undressed quickly. The cold Atlantic air bit at her pale flesh as the salt water spray washed it away in thick, gelatinous globs. She sank slowly to the ground feeling her formless body filling all the spaces between each grain of sand.
Ah to be free from that shell. Kali had almost forgotten how wonderful of a sensation it was. She slipped over the shiny black rocks, worn smooth by time and water, into the deep black sea where Sam was waiting for her.
Mating season had finally begun.

The Ladies of Horror

Out of the Embers
by H.R. Boldwood

With the strike of a match, her world changed.
She breathed the pungent smoke and swore the air had never smelled more pure. Life had never held more promise. Her future, a tapestry of trials and triumphs, beckoned her from beyond the ring of red-hot coals — beyond the reach of the monster that burned within them. She lost herself among the flames until nothing but cinders remained.
No more fear. No more pain. No more begging for mercy that would never be hers. She raked the cinders carefully crushing what bits of bone remained. Freedom rose from those ashen coals like a great winged bird, filling her with hope and courage. She buried her memories and the bits of bone, her scars and the dying embers deep beneath the loam and smiled.
With the strike of a match had come deliverance.

The Ladies of Horror

Coast of Gold
by Lori R. Lopez

Men have long scoured the lands and seas
For an elusive mineral, a glittering ore
That succumbs the strongest to its foul disease,
And would dash them upon its forsaken shore.
The legend was whispered from ear to ear
Of a cove where the glimmer of gold did blind
The fools who dared aim their sails too near —
Then smashed into rocks; a spectacular find!
Their bones litter sand that wickedly shines,
A gilded gleam as could make men weep.
If only they avoided its sharp water-mines,
Guarding the coast like cannons of a keep …
With edges that’ll cleave and sunder a ship,
Split and scuttle its hull in a wily flash.
Boulders of gold that might steal a man’s grip,
While shifting and lunging to carve a gash.
The ghosts of drowned sailors haunt its brink,
Pacing and grumbling, cursing ill luck —
To spend an eternity surrounded by a drink
Of molten treasure; in its vessel stuck.
Marooned by the lure of nuggets and dust,
A miserable fortune that sickened lost souls.
Pining and mourning, regretting their trust
In a wayward voyage with Midas goals.
Turn rudders away from that yellow sheen:
The tint of great riches; a majestic hue!
Never heed the call of the Siren Queen,
Lest the fate of many should happen to you.
Spirits wait to embrace the next sorry lot
Of feverish seekers with stars in their eyes,
Headed for a Gold Coast of wreckage and rot,
Where they will be in for a morbid surprise.
One crew of specters, another of bones;
Daggers and cutlasses raised for a charge.
These merciless deadmen, a band of unknowns,
Will murder the rats who survive by and large.
