The Ladies of Horror

Tears and Lightening
by Julianne Snow

You know she’s angry when the lightning comes. You may not be sure what you’ve done wrong, but the reverberating sound of her thunder shakes your bones, turning your knees into jelly. Wrath, like you’ve never seen destroys the world around as you quake in your hiding spot, waiting for her to find you.
Because you know she will.
Her tears hit the ground in torrents, washing away edifices and infrastructure, not caring of the destruction or the death. The closer she gets, the louder she becomes, the wail of her wind screams at you, the pitch driving you insane as it scours the surface.
With a crashing rend of triumph, she finds you, her vengeance fully directed at you now. There’s nothing you can do but submit to her will. She lifts you in her embrace, tossing you around like a rag doll, breaking you with no remorse. You fall back to the ground, tossed there like garbage, your last moments filled with the sights, sounds, and smells of her.
Mother Nature can certainly be a bitch.

The Ladies of Horror

The Gilded Cage
by Jaime Johnesee

Her name was Fenris and she was the most beautiful Fae I’d ever seen. It was my good fortune to catch her in the desert as she lay on a rock sunbathing. Her wings were spread wide and a smile of satisfaction beamed upon her tiny face as she absorbed the energy of the sun.
I knew in that moment I had to possess her, own her. I knew then that there was nobody in this world fit for her and that it was my duty to protect and watch over her.
I quickly scooped her up and dumped her in the mason jar that had held my moonshine, after poking holes in the lid, of course.
It took me over an hour to walk home. By then, she was sweating and panting in the heat of the glass-jar prison turned accidental convection oven.
I gave her a small sliver of ice cube and a few grapes then set to work crafting her cage. It had to be large enough to give her room to walk around and even fly a bit.
I used carbon steel wire, wrapped in coils of gold. It took twelve hours and I had to stop twice to feed her a few shortbread cookies and some more fruit.
When the cage was finished, I plucked her out of the mason jar and gave her access to my bathroom sink to take a bath or shower. A Q-Tip served as her washcloth and a washcloth made a fine towel.
I laid out a dress that had once been my sister’s doll’s dress–I’d cut out the back for Fenris’ wings. When she was dressed, I placed her inside her new cage and locked the door.
“There now, you’re safe inside here forever and ever.” I told her.

The Ladies of Horror

Time Waits for No Man
by Melissa R. Mendelson

The full moon slithered out from beneath the clouds.  It stretched over the trees that still dripped with rain.  Its gentle light kissed the ground, shadowing secrets better left buried, but still the digging continued.  And the moon drew closer, curious of the shadows hunched in front of a car, but just as the body was found, another cloud came and ate the moon.
“I can’t believe you killed him,” one man whispered.  “What were you thinking?”
“Shut up, and help me.  We have to move him before the cops come,” the other man snapped at him.
“I’m not getting involved with this.”
“You’re already involved, Marty, so pick up his fucking legs.”
“Things were simpler when we were kids, Jones,” Marty sighed and jumped down into the hole.
“Oh, Christ.”
Standing in front of them was a naked girl.  Her skin was pale, and her feet were dirty.  Wet leaves stuck to her legs.  Her arms shook as she covered her breasts, and her legs crossed together.  She inched back, but it was too late.
“What do we have here,” Jones whispered harshly against her ear.
“Jones, the cops.”
“Oh, yeah.  Guess we’ll have to take her with us.”  He spun her around, pushing his body into hers, and he was surprised by her soft lips as she kissed him.
Marty’s blood ran cold.  The man now kissing the girl was as frail as a leaf, and his hair was a shocking white.  When she finally released him, he sputtered and spat like a wild animal, and his face sagged down to the ground, pulling the flesh off in the process and revealing nothing but bone and empty eye sockets.  And Marty screamed, but it was too late.
“What did you do to me,” he cried, not recognizing his own voice.  Then, he realized that she towered over him.  His hands were small.  His clothes hung over him like a tent, and the moon slipped out across a small pool of water.  And he did not recognize the boy that stared back.
The girl disappeared, walking through the woods.  Her face matured.  Her hair grew long and straight.  She shined in the moonlight before it disappeared, and when the moon appeared again, it found an old crane with silver hair.  Then she crumpled to the ground, becoming nothing more than skin and bone, and a moment later, a child roamed.

The Ladies of Horror

No Fairytale Ending
by Lori R. Lopez

She was losing her mind,
Cell by cell,
With every bird that fled the scene —
Casting stray insignificant shadows
Chasing puffy cloud wisps
That failed to spill their guts
And sound an alarm
In the wake of the Sun as it
Neared the horizon.
Trees were collecting, encroaching
Like darkness,
And all she could do was sit
Hoping for a hero
To save her from this tedious yet
Premature demise.
Her story had just begun!
It was too soon for it to end
Before a single word had been written.
Empty pages could not protect
From the horrors of the forest stalkers
As they edged closer, greedy
To bury her and feed
On flesh and blood, the marrow
Of youth-filled bones.
This book would have no
Fairytale happy ending
If a gallant rescuer didn’t arrive soon!
What was taking him so long?
She was bored, because trees did not
Rampage, they crept, and a person
Could fall asleep at this rate.
Yet she was afraid if her lids did
Droop, it would be all over.
They had sent a scout to
Keep a stiff eye on her (or knothole).
“Go away!” she hissed.
“My prince will come!
And when he does, you’ll be sorry.”
In her country, technically a kingdom,
That was a girl’s best option:
Waiting for a prince.
Alas for her,
No fearless champion arrived.
She had a reputation for being pushy
And rude, sarcastic, not to mention
Ungrateful.  Even the trees
Were hesitant, debating
Until she got up and left.
It was a long walk home . . .
Alone.

The Ladies of Horror

Lady of the Loch
by Ela Lourenco

I no longer feel the crystal drops tracing down my cheeks, nor do the icy waters trouble me. This is all I know now, it is all that I am. Born of a mother’s womb, yet fated to become ‘other’. Snatched at infancy by the fey I am no longer mortal, no longer am I of the Earth.
Lady of the Loch they call me, whispering my name in hushed tones of quiet terror. I am the darkness waiting in the glacial depths, I am the end to all beginnings.
I am become heartless, deaf to sorrow and pain, my feelings numbed after centuries past. I mourn not my family, long departed to a place I can never follow.
Robbed of a chance of home and hearth, I seek fleeting solace in the arms of those departed souls who, lured by the teasing rippling of my glassy surface, were foolish enough to dare to glimpse upon my true reflection.
Bound am I to forever haunt these shores, destined to lure men to their watery graves.
I may be alone, but I will never be forgotten.

The Ladies of Horror

Waves
by Nina D’Arcangela

Trapped within this bubble, I feel nothing of the arid landscape that surrounds me. I sit in subjugation, offered scraps to feed upon; amuse-bouche for the soul, or so I imagine. Apportioned morsels to sustain me, but never more than your callous ego will allow. Yes, I have licked the plate and the tang has seared my tongue, left a residue of shame that will forever taint my pallet. I once soared with as much grace and majesty as the prey that circles overhead – a dangerous companion to adopt, a folly perhaps, as I know what it awaits.
Freedom, such a simple thing, stolen from me by destiny’s choice; a truth mourned beyond measure. I was vibrant once, as vibrant as the now desiccated tree before me. I see its brittle limbs, its exposed bones; the crack that foretells of the next fractured moment. I live that moment with every breath, forever caught just before the fall, perpetually suspended in a state of flux. With bowed back, I am forced to genuflect, to stare into a shallow pool that lacks reflection; a me without identity, stripped of all dignity. With broken wings, I stagnate in this cage never to glide on lighter waves of air again.

The Ladies of Horror

Exit the World Dreaming
by Bailey Hunter

I don’t know when it began; I only know that it grows steadily worse.  Entire days seem to flit past and I, catching only glimpses of them, struggle to maintain a tenuous grip.
That part of my life—the part that goes on without me—has always been there.  I drift to sleep and he takes over.  He leaves me with mundane, simple images of the monotony of work, families, dinners and conversations.  They were never more than a slight interruption in my world.
Things have changed.  These interludes last longer and are becoming increasingly more shattered.  Darkness and hunger permeates every shard of these missing moments.  I try to force myself to stay awake but I am unable.
I fear I am losing my place in this world.
When I do finally wake, the images of those lost hours sit rancid upon my tongue.  They attack me in brilliant flashes of clarity.  Fiery hair splaying, crimson nails clawing, swollen and ruddy lips twisting, dragging me down into sanguine rivers, into the red. Red, red… everything red.
All that was, is laid to waste.
Trapped in this madness, no amount of struggle will free me.  My whole existence has gone insane. He will not sleep. I cannot wake.
    I am vanishing,
      gradually fading away,
        and soon,
I shall cease to exist at all.

Reality
by Suzie Lockhart

Reality. I’d had enough.
So…I did what any serious book-lover does. I escaped into a good book.
To say I got more than I bargained for would be an understatement.
The book was called, “From the Clouds Beyond”. Odd name, I know. That’s what intrigued me. The name, and the cover; beaming rays of sunshine bursting through puffy clouds lured me into those pages.
Something unusual happened as I immersed myself in the main character’s escapades. It’s hard to explain. I could relate to her, you see, and everything she was going through—this middle-aged woman trying to figure out who she was, because I was on that same journey of self-discovery. I felt as if I was becoming one with her…and then, I did. I was sucked into those pages, quite literally.
I found myself on the other side, trapped in an imaginary world of make-believe.
I sat down on the little red director’s chair.
I inhaled the aroma of freshly cut grass, and watched starlings weave in and out of clouds that were practically within my reach. The leaves on the tree beside me rustled in the light breeze.
This was a new beginning.
I would write my own story.

The Ladies of Horror

Pélé’s Wrath
by E.A. Black

Lucy and I climbed over the boulders, heading for the car with the volcano at our backs. The Pacific filled the horizon, its calm blue waters hiding turmoil beneath the waves. A storm surged in the distance. We needed to get back to our hotel before rain pelted us. Lucy had stuffed her pockets with lava rocks, but I had refrained from doing so.
I tried to warn her. You don’t take Pélé’s lava rocks or she will unleash her wrath upon you. I knew it was true. I read about it on the Internet. Lucy refused to listen, calling me a superstitious twit.
On the way back to the hotel, our car blew a tire. The garage where we bought a new tire gouged us. The mechanic also found a brake problem we had no choice but to fix. Lucy came down with a scorching case of food poisoning after eating improperly cleaned fugu. She could have died. She spent the next two days in the hospital. Her favorite paua shell necklace broke. She dropped her iPhone and the glass cracked. Her boyfriend, being a cowardly ass, broke up with her via email. Facebook put her in jail for a week for posting a book cover with sideboob on it after some cretin reported her. And then her favorite cat died.
All this happened within four days. On the fifth day, we drove to the volcano and returned Pélé’s lava rocks with our most heartfelt apologies for stealing from her. From that point on, the bad luck ceased.
That didn’t stop us from white-knuckling it all the way home on the turbulent plane ride. We had learned our lesson. Never piss off a goddess.

The Ladies of Horror

Deliverance
by Killion Slade

You rejected me from conception. You couldn’t kill me then, but the narcissistic victim reveled in every moment of the pity-party. My abandonment was your theme some. My scars bear evidence of my determination as I fought the bonds of your rejection, desperate for an ounce of kindness, protection, or a mother’s love. After decades, the desecration of our mother-daughter relationship was immutable. I’ve challenged you, and I’ve faced the abstruse layers of your betrayal. The impenetrable bubble has popped. I soar free from the cage of hate you use to imprison my soul. Your reward? I am your mirror. Every time you look at or think of me – you are now forever trapped in your karmic prison. Your new theme song is deliverance.
