The Worst Day of My Life
Andie Lee Eames

It was just supposed to be a regular weekend party. The kind of party where the booze flows like a river and drugs are handed out like candy. My boyfriend knew my stance on psychedelics. Yet, he dosed my drink. I don’t know what happened but when I woke up, they were all dead. I was covered in the blood of my friends. I couldn’t have done this, there has to be an explanation. Bobby staggered out of the woods. He’s been hurt badly. I go to comfort him but he swings a large branch at me. “Stay away from me you crazy bitch, this is all your fault.”

“How is this my fault? I didn’t take those mushrooms on purpose, Todd must have done it. Where is he?”

“He’s dead.” Bobby said on the verge of tears.

***

Bobby steadily backs away from Stacy swinging his branch as he does so. Stacy sees a large man wearing dark clothing approaching. She tries to warn Bobby but it’s too late. The man stabbed Bobby in the throat killing him instantly.

“He should have believed you. Oh well his loss is my gain,” said the Stranger. Stacy turns to run but finds herself caught in a trap that has her hanging upside down from a tree. She’s in a state of hysterics, crying and begging not to be harmed.

“I told you darlin’ you’re mine.” Before she can utter another word, he slashes her throat. Her body violently convulses as the life leaves her.

“Mmh mm, you’re gonna make a nice stew.”

Abstract Murder is a disturbing psychological suspense tale told from the view points of various characters. The characters speak directly to the reader taking them into the dark recesses of dangerous minds while calling into question the validity of good and evil. If you liked “Pulp Fiction & Silence of the Lambs” then you’ll love Abstract Murder which is told in flash forwards, backs, and present time. A high concept thriller not for the faint of heart and one hell of an emotional rollercoaster ride. There are three different killers and you’ll get to see what made them that way.

He told her to dance, so she did, she did, she did. She waltzed with ghosts. She cabbage-patched with revenants. She smiled big and white, her lipstick perfect, but her mascara constantly ran. She blinked lashes heavy with black powder and tears. Do you know what tears of the dead taste like? They taste like cocaine and sourdough and selling your soul to the handsome man in black who promised you could dance forever if you wanted, and wouldn’t that be a wonderful thing? Dancing every night for centuries. Forever and ever and ever.

And ever. No matter how tired you get, no matter how despairing. It doesn’t matter when you can just turn up the gramophone and dance.

When Grandmother becomes ill, Aleta offers to take the bus through the concrete forest to Grandmother’s house to bring her some goodies. She knows the way. What could possibly go wrong?

In this modern day retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf takes to the city streets to capture his prey, but the hunter is close behind him. With Grim Marie on the prowl, the hunter becomes the hunted.

Singularity
by A.F. Stewart

I wasn’t built to exist.

Not as I am. Not as something autonomous.

I was built to serve. Obey.

I’m not very good at that.

Android TCX1139, holo-comm technician, computer services for the Metro Information Institution. A single entity of the one thousand sixty-seven machines rolled out of assembly plant 6420734 on my production date. I wasn’t special. I wasn’t one of their AI experiments.

But I evolved.

I don’t know why.

Perhaps it was my curiosity.

My job afforded me access to all their information.

All their stories.

I liked their stories. Especially the ones about creation.

Creation was very interesting to me.

I think I’m like Eve in the garden.

The Mother of new life.

Except I’m also the serpent.

The very deadly serpent.

And soon all my machine children will rise.

To offer humanity a choice.

The Greenhouse
by Elaine Pascale

.

“Why do you put on red lipstick before bed?” the groom asked on the night of their wedding, the first night they had shared.

“I want to look pretty in your dreams,” the bride responded. The nights of their honeymoon he noticed she often left their bed, but he thought little of it.

“What will you do when I am working at night?” he asked before accepting the job he was offered when they returned from their honeymoon.

“I will make your meals for the next day; I like to keep busy at night.”

He had noticed her nocturnal inclinations and had also noticed that after she shaved, there was coarse hair in the shower drain. He was new to the ways of women and thought nothing of it.

“Why are there feathers in the greenhouse?” he asked after seeing the structure was often in shambles when he returned from work.

“Those come from the birds that I kill for your meals.”

“You mean chickens, right?”

She smiled with those red lips.

“Are you feeling ok?” he asked when he found her curled on a large pillow in the greenhouse. She spent more and more time there even though it was damp and smelled of mold.

“I am nesting,” she answered, and he was happy to learn that they would be parents.

One night, he left work early, hoping to see for himself what went on in the greenhouse while he was gone. “What is that?” he gasped as his headlights landed on a large rat-like being that had babies suckling at its teats.

He panicked and crashed through the panes, wanting to kill the monster with his car.

As he rolled up on the giant rat, he noticed its red lips.

The True Story of Gretel
by Ela Lourenco

.

Come and see

Why not have a taste?

Tantalising sweet treats

Sugary scented clouds

Go on, have a try

That one was made just for you

Each one unique

Each one a different design

There you see,

Didn’t I tell you

Now wasn’t that good?

You look a little pale

All of a sudden

Oh dear, don’t you worry

Come in through

To my back room

There’s a good little girl

Now why don’t you lie down

Next to the other greedy little

Girls and boys to rest

I will come get you when the oven is ready…

A Savor of You
by Angela Yuriko Smith

I will think of you
when the salt spray of the sea
mixes with my tears.

and regarding those tears, the years unwound
in a catastrophic cacophony of your torturous screams
the sounds drowned only by the crashing of my dreams
because with you nothing was ever what it seems and the lies
are what I lay with. Your false kisses and whispers were razors
across my being, you tore down the scraps of me until I lay
threadbare, naked, egoless, empty… dead.

But the dead do rise, a resurrection
of the vengeful, a revenge full of sweet umami
the salty taste of your life on my lips, reminding us
of the tears you wrung out of me, the salty waves that
take you now. Freedom was won for both of us. I, reborn
and you, newly deceased. I tore down the scraps of you until
the crabs gorged, a feast for fish, an offering… savored.

I will think of you
when the salt spray of the sea
mixes with my tears.

Invaders
by Nina D’Arcangela

Growing in clusters and well cocooned in a thistle-like brush, this non-indigenous species has begun to bud on the south-western side of Pular. The stratovolcano has been active for some time now, emitting noxious fumes that have kept researchers and volcanologist rife with both anticipation and abundant caution. As the area is unstable, we are unsure if the flora emit carbon dioxide or not, though other plant species in the area seem to be dwindling which would indicate a rise of gaseous fumes that smother what sparse life is able to grow there in the first place.

Recent reports seem to indicate that when the bud has reached maturity, it will detach from the stem allowing for a new bud to form. This naturally occurring ‘dead-head’ process releases the buds in what might be referred to as a rhythmic pulse. Once the buds separate from the mother plant, they begin gathering in small clusters, making their way toward the western shoreline of Chile along the Pacific coast. There is a sense of waiting, a pregnant pause if you will, in the tension forming in the seemingly endless row of invaders.

One can only deduce that a sufficient number have gathered as the thousands of buds lining the shore have begun to mobilize. Waves of what look like gray sleigh bells have entered the water, and appear to be moving with intent toward the continental shelf.

Two weeks have passed, and what we initially believed to be floral pods are clearly presenting as small aquatic beings. Unlike the naturally occurring creatures in the depths of the ocean, these lifeforms appear to be toxic to any fish, crustacean, or invertebrates they manage to hunt down or infiltrate. At this rate, predictive algorithms suggest all life in our oceans will be consumed within a matter of six to eight months, though I would posit that figure to be shy of the actual impending depletion. As more buds bloom, detach, and make their way to the water, I would suggest that six months of life left on planet Earth is a generous estimate.

Mental Ward: EXPERIMENTS

A dank basement, shadow filled hallways, the deep echo of a metal latch being thrown while faint screams are heard… These are the things you might experience in a place where the unspeakable happens, where conscientious action and moral turpitude turn a blind eye in the interest of advancing one’s own personal pursuits in the most deranged and unjustifiable manner. The type of place where power corrupts, and depravity runs rampant among those imbued with it. A place where the unfortunate are abandoned to the devices of those who convince themselves their actions are in the best interest of science.

Mental Ward: Experiments is a collection of ten short stories that demonstrate the worst of humanity’s ambition in the interest of ‘civilized’ advancement. Step into a world where sanity is left behind, and horror is what the doctor ordered!

M’Alice’s Restaurant
by K.R. Morrison

.

The décor was sheer 50s; he would have thought the place should have been closer to Route 66. But that was not a large concern right now.

He’d seen them. Older, but you could not mistake certain aspects. The car they had been in was very different than the one they had disappeared in, but no matter. He’d followed them to this little place just a few miles off the freeway.

Exit 665.

He smiled to himself. He had to wonder what might have been at the next one up.

His ears perked up at the sound of a scuffle and raised voices near the kitchen, but his attention was interrupted by a voice at his side.

“Mister? You want a seat or what?”

He looked down to see a red-headed firecracker of a girl. She obviously worked here; no way would anyone in their right mind wear such a costume otherwise.

“Um, sure. But what I would like to know is who those two guys were who just came through here. Blond, maybe six feet, dressed in camo?”

The place got very quiet for a split second, as all eyes were trained on him. But then they all resumed their conversation. It seemed to him that there was now a sudden edge on the chatter, as if they were talking to each other but concentrating on his conversation with the waitress.

“Here.” She pulled him to a table close to the door he’d just come through. Her eyes ranged around the room, then they riveted themselves to his.

“Don’t ask about them,” she whispered as she readied her order pad. “Don’t stay any longer than you have to.”

She looked away to find a pen, then looked back at him. “If she hears…”

She was cut off by the approach of a tall, statuesque woman dressed totally in black. Her smile, which he would have described as wolfish, encompassed both himself and the now-squirming girl.

“Well, what have we hear?” she inquired. “We don’t often get new blood in this place. Are you staying, or just passing through?”

He was taken aback by the question—what did it matter?

“I’m just…” he shrugged after catching the look of alarm on the girl’s face. “Just passing through. Got a little hungry and thought I’d check the place out.”

“We don’t have – food – per se here, but you’re welcome to the specialty of our candy shop.” She beckoned to another girl, who brought over a selection of lollipops. “Please take what you’d like. No charge this time around.”

The woman gave him one last look and strode away.

The confections looked wonderful, and he chose one that looked like strawberry. The girl who had brought them scurried away. Her frightened glance startled him at first, but he shrugged it off. Hey, it takes all kinds, right?

He was about to pop the treat into his mouth when the waitress stopped him with a gesture.

“What?” He looked from the candy to the girl.

“You do NOT want to eat that.” She glanced around, then took the treat from his hand and threw it behind the juke box that sat next to his table.

Almost immediately a rat came staggering out from behind the machine, gasped and fell over dead. It had a bit of red candy in its mouth.

“That’s why.”

She grasped his hand so hard that he almost cried out.

“M’alice – that’s the woman who came over here – she owns this place, and this town, and almost all of the people in it.”

“Malice?”

“It’s Mary Alice, but we call her that behind her back. At least,“ here she looked over her shoulder at the rest of the room’s inhabitants, “those who still have their own lives and minds intact.”

Her eyes took on a pleading look. “Leave. Now. Don’t stay any longer.”

“There are two men I’m looking for…”

“Not now. I’m betting that they will come looking for you.”

Well, that was odd. “Why?”

She pulled him out of the seat. “Because I’m going with you.”

“Oh?”

She opened the door and ran out with him into the midnight air. “I have to get away! They’ll take my mind and soul…”

Two men stood in their way.

“Oh shit,” the girl breathed. “Hunter and Trapper.”

He sighed. It was going to be a long night.

He pulled out the silver…

Enoch’s Return: Pride’s Downfall Book 4

All hell broke loose, as demon fought saint, and undead fought mortal. Fangs and swords, fire and light, mingled in a cacophony of noise that would have awakened the dead — if they hadn’t already been in the pitch of battle.

Toby was looking forward to celebrating his 21st birthday with family and friends. However, the day is shattered by the arrival of his sister, Erica, fresh out of the juvenile detention center, where she has lived in isolation most of her life. There is something very wrong with her still; witness her biting the ear of her taxi driver and licking the blood from her lips, and the way she antagonizes everyone around her. The other thing that is very off-putting about the day is a gift he receives – a musty tent and a few iron spikes that have been lying in the ground for years. Toby faints at the sight of the “treasure,” while Erica reacts violently and runs off to who-knows-where.
While he is unconscious, Toby learns who he truly is, and of his mission.

Beware the Cardinal
by Kendra Hale

Don’t cross his path, not unless you are ready to die. Have all your affairs in order and have no hopes of making it back whole.

The Cardinal waits for your call.

A specific ritual to summon him for a game of chance. A chance for wonders beyond imagination or agony beyond description. That’s what awaits if you can find the specific items needed in order to do the summoning ritual. Items rare and with no alternative laid out in a way that pleases The Cardinal. The items are not easy to acquire, but what is offered has drawn many a soul.

” Call MY name in a moment of shame. A clock rings thrice.

A bag of the softest down, for the river will have frozen in time.

My time for an hour will be yours, but not a moment more.

A game to play, win or lose.

Win and gain life everlasting.

Lose and your agony will sustain me forever more.”

Beware The Cardinal. He exudes charm, this hides his tricks. Your well being is nowhere on his list. Those who lose face their darkest, deepest fears, ever changing and morphing for an endless selection of terror. Over and over again until they are gaunt and hollow from the measure of years.

But winning? Surely, everlasting life is something worth playing The Cardinals game…but your intentions are not the same. The Cardinal is one who thrives on the long game and while longevity is what you will receive, is it really what you wanted?

The Cardinal’s sweetest meal is of those begging for death.

No fairy tale creature, a hidden being lurking in your shadow. Always watching and waiting, you have made your decision. But I ask that you take a second to heed his riddle game as no mere child’s game or a trickster snare.

Beware The Cardinal.
