The Ladies of Horror
Picture-Prompt Writing Challenge!
Smashing Pumpkins
by Rie Sheridan Rose
We are the broken.
The misshapen.
The unwanted.
The ones who remain behind
when the patch has been stripped
by eager children looking for
Jack O’ Lantern pumpkins.
Considered ugly and unsuitable.
.
But life goes on regardless.
We continue to grow as we
cling to the vine, knowing
it isn’t over.
There is still one part to play.
We know the night is coming.
And we do not fear it.
They set their candles around
our bases to light the ritual.
It’s part of the game.
Boys and girls in their Halloween best
dancing like ghosts around the circle.
It’s as old as time…the dance, the candles,
the costumes, the anticipation…
.
and then the clock strikes its midnight toll.
.
And they smash the ill-made pumpkins.

Dark Poetry
Poems exploring hell and damnation. Tales of sorrow, vengeance, betrayal, and redemption. Ghosts, ghouls, and demons stalk these pages. Don’t read in a lonely house…in a darkened room by a single candle…
…unless you like the touch of an icy finger up your spine.
