They Live in Darkness

They live in darkness and they wait, often coming forth when everything is silent. Sometimes they arrive in turbulent storms like the one coming now, in high country. I sit here shivering when I remember what was done, what they might do—I know no other recourse. I feel their presence as I watch the aspens sway. Winds push past me to the valley below, and night creatures lay low to earth. When I was young, I did some foolish things, I know only that I remember their screams. But I never touched a one of their small bodies, never wrapped them in towels, that was someone else. Never washed the blood and dirt from my hands in the river that ran forever down the Colorado canyon. I see them floating down the mountainside, eyes blazing with hatred, small white hands reaching for me. And their laughter blends with the growing storm, with the realization that this time, I am their victim.
