The Ladies of Horror
Picture-Prompt Writing Challenge!

by Ela Lourenco

When I was a little girl skipping through the woods, I saw a white rabbit leap down a hole. Young and carefree I followed it in and fell into a world of marvels, Mad hatters and tea parties. I spoke to a crazy cat, stood up to the Queen of Hearts… I lived a lifetime in that short moment in time. Sweet memories and a kaleidoscope of wonders in my heart when I returned breathless to tell my parents what I had seen.
At first they smiled, then they frowned. I was sent to bed without my tea. Urgent harsh whispers filled the house that night and come morning only blank faces met me. “We are off on an outing,” I was told and I did up my coat. And we drove down dreary country lanes to a village remote. An imposing stone building appeared round the bend, colourless, lifeless, many shades of grey.
I was pushed through the doors and met by the tallest, thinnest, dourest-faced woman I had ever seen. That was when I first heard the blood-curdling screams.
“Come along child, you will be here awhile,” the spindly giant said to me as I was abandoned there by my own family.
They did things to me. Asked the same questions over and over again. I was punished severely every time I mentioned Wonderland. I was tied to a bed, then tied to a chair. Days turned to weeks, weeks to years, until my once blonde head was now all grey hair.
“Recant, admit the truth. Wonderland is not real.” I must have heard this a million times. I never gave up. Never. I would not deny the truth. My life is now almost spent but still I persist. The memories of that magical place were all that kept me from going insane.
