Mother Earth
by Kathleen McCluskey
Lauren sat in her luxurious corner office and looked at the contract. She knew that the manufacturing of the plastic bottles was hazardous to the environment but she wanted, no craved the money this new contract held for her company. The dumping of the toxic waste her company produced was becoming an issue, with this contract that issue would disappear. She let out a heavy sigh and signed. She closed her tired eyes and sleep took her.
She found herself in a lush garden, birds chirping and butterflies a flutter. Lauren looked around and saw a large figure walking towards her. She tried to run but the haunting figure closed quickly. The skeletal hand lifter her up by her neck. It spoke in a low grumbly voice, “You have been convicted of heinous acts on the environment. Mother Earth has sent me to gather your repentance.” Lauren tried to scream but no sound came. The figure still had her by the throat. It then threw her to the ground. Lauren tried to crawl away but could not move in the mud surrounding her. The executioner pointed to the mud, “This is your prison cell for eternity. Mother Earth is tired of trying to keep this planet from ruin. Humans are the scourge of the universe. You destroy everything you come into contact with. Now she wants her revenge on those that disregard beauty and poison it.”
Lauren’s fate was sealed. Five long branches began to crawl up her body. She tried to push them away but they still crawled over her. They consumed her lower half. The small branches were now above her head, the dry roots are all the remained around Lauren. The dark figure spoke again, “You have been punished by Mother Earth. Now you will have to provide the punishment for others who insult the queen. The roots around you that are now part of a strangle tree will help rid the beautiful blue planet of interlopers such as yourself.” It vanished.
