Women in Horror Month 2016 – Featured Author: Loren Rhoads @MorbidLoren #WiHM7

Loren Rhoads

Author_Loren_Rhoads

I am the author of The Dangerous Type, Kill By Numbers, and No More Heroes: the In the Wake of the Templars trilogy.  I’m the co-author (with Brian Thomas) of the As Above, So Below books, Lost Angels and Angelus Rose, which are coming out this year.  My short stories appear in nEvermore: Tales of Murder, Mystery, and the Macabre and in the new anthology Fright Mare: Women Write Horror. Oh, and I blog about cemeteries as travel destinations. My collection of travel essays is called Wish You Were Here: Adventures in Cemetery Travel.

I think of my novels as mashups.  Before The Dangerous Type came out last year, I described it as a Hong Kong-style revenge space opera with a Hammer Horror villain.  Publishers Weekly accused me of bringing the style of grimdark fantasy to space opera. Kill By Numbers, the second volume in the series, is a Philip K. Dick mind-warp adventure story about confronting a stalker ex-boyfriend who wants to change the galaxy.  The third book, No More Heroes, is a courtroom drama with bounty hunters, killer robots, and time travel.

The As Above, So Below series, which I’m rebooting in April, combines erotic horror and dark fantasy.  It’s about a succubus who sets her sights on an angel – who then possesses her with a mortal girl’s soul.  Once again I’m crossing genres and blurring boundaries.

I read across genres.  I like science fiction ghost stories and zombie erotica and political urban fantasy. I don’t understand why anyone would choose to limit herself to one genre.

The Dangerous Type: In the Wake of the Templars Book One

LorenRhoads_TheDangerousTypeSet in the wake of a galaxy-wide war and the destruction of a human empire, The Dangerous Typefollows the awakening of one of the galaxy’s most dangerous assassins and her quest for vengeance. Entombed for twenty years, Raena has been found and released.

Thallian has been on the lam for the last fifteen years.  He’s a wanted war criminal whose entire family has been hunted down and murdered for their role in the galaxy-wide genocide of the Templars. His name is the first on Raena’s list, as he’s the one that enslaved her, made her his assassin, and ultimate put her in a tomb. But Thallian is willing to risk everything–including his army of cloned sons–to capture her. Now it’s a race to see who kills whom first.

Alternatively, Gavin has spent the last twenty years trying to forget about Raena, whom he once saved and then lost to Thallian. Raena’s adopted sister, Ariel, has been running from the truth — the one about Raena, about herself and Gavin — and doesn’t know if she’ll be able to face either of them.

The Dangerous Type is a mix of military science fiction and an adventurous space opera that grabs you from the first pages and doesn’t let go. Along with a supporting cast of smugglers, black market doctors, and other ne’er-do-wells sprawled across a galaxy brimming with alien life, The Dangerous Type is a fantastic beginning to Loren Rhoads’s epic trilogy.

Wish You Were Here

LorenRhoads_WishYouWereHere“Lovingly researched and lushly described, Loren’s essays transport you to the graveyard, where she is quite a tour guide. Curiosity and compassion burn at the heart of these essays.”—Paula Guran, editor of Dark Echo magazine Almost every tourist destination has a graveyard. You go to Yosemite National Park: there’s a graveyard. You go to Maui: graveyards everywhere you look. The Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park: both graveyards. The number one tourist destination in Michigan has three cemeteries. America’s best-preserved Gold Rush ghost town has five. Gettysburg is a National Park because it has a graveyard. Some graveyards are even tourist destinations in themselves: the Old Jewish Cemetery of Prague, the colonial burying grounds of Boston, and Kennedy’s eternal flame in Arlington National Cemetery. Jim Morrison’s grave in Père Lachaise Cemetery ranks in the top five tourist sites of Paris. Wish You Were Here: Adventures in Cemetery Travel contains 35 graveyard travel essays, which visit more than 50 cemeteries, churchyards, and gravesites across the globe. Over the past two decades, Loren Rhoads has visited literally hundreds of graveyards. She’s traveled to London’s Highgate Cemetery, strolled through the Paris Catacombs, seen Hollywood Forever pulled back from the brink of destruction, studied Native American graveyards in Michigan, explored a circuit minister’s churchyard on Maui, delved into the Protestant Cemetery of Rome and Zoshigaya Reien in Tokyo, and made stops in Prague, Boston, Los Angeles, Hiroshima, Yosemite, Sleepy Hollow, Gettysburg, and New Orleans along the way. Come along on her adventures in cemeteries around the world. Loren Rhoads was the creator of the cult nonfiction magazine Morbid Curiosity. She edited the book Death’s Garden: Relationships with Cemeteries and served as the monthly cemetery columnist at Gothic.Net for four years. Now she blogs about graveyards as travel destinations at CemeteryTravel.com. “With her dead-on honesty and her fascination for the dark side of life in all its complexity, Loren’s writing never fails to make me think.”—Thomas Roche, Loren’s editor at Gothic.Net

Fright Mare-Women Write Horror

LorenRhoads_FrightmareWomen write horror and have written it since before Mary Shelley wrote FRANKENSTEIN. This anthology is to highlight the fact women write great horror and to kill the fallacy that they aren’t in some way up to standard. They are. Read here stories by Elizabeth Massie, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Lucy Taylor, and a plethora of other great writers as they work on your nerves, get inside your head, and bang out some of the scariest tales written today. I’m proud to present these women for your consideration, as Rod Serling might say, as I ask you to step into FRIGHT MARE. Lock the door and windows, put on a light, and remember, it’s not real. It’s not real. Midnight awaits, monsters scheme to take you away, the strange and weird wait in the shadows, but it’s not real. Is it?

Women in Horror Month 2016 – Featured Author: Peggy Christie @PMonkey #WiHM7

Peggy Christie

Author_Peggy_Christie

Hello everyone. I’m Peggy Christie and I’m addicted to horror.

*Hi, Peggy*

I’ve been watching horror movies and television since I was a kid. Every Saturday afternoon I would tune in to Creature Feature with Sir Graves Ghastly. Here I was introduced to one of my first loves, Vincent Price (yes, I had a few – Patrick in kindergarten, Davy Jones from the Monkees, and Dracula from…everything). This tall, velvet voiced man brought horror to life for me, either as a tortured soul or a psycho who reveled in the torture of others.

In 6th grade I was introduced to Creative Writing. It was my first real opportunity to build my own world of horror. And what I made…was terrible. I basically wrote two ‘murder mysteries’ where I killed off all my classmates in the most horrific and gruesome ways I could fathom. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise when my teacher forbade me from writing “those kinds of things” anymore.

As I respected all forms of authority back then, I did what I was told. But since those were the kinds of things I wanted to create, I simply stopped writing all together.

Fast forward 19 years to a particularly terrible day at work. I don’t know what made me think writing would be a better form of therapy than putting laxatives in my boss’s coffee but that’s exactly what I did. By the end of the day I had a written a short story about a jerk-off manager who accidentally kills his secretary, covers it up, and she comes back to haunt him. Not particularly original but they say write what you know.

(I should probably clarify that I was a secretary at the time and my boss was an ass hat that day)

The rest is history. Once I rediscovered my love of writing, I couldn’t stop. I knew there were more people out there, outside of repressed 6th grade teachers with bugs up their backsides, who loved horror as much as I did. Slowly but surely I built my collection of stories and publishing credits. True, I’ve had a hell of a lot more rejections than acceptances but those just encourage me to keep on keepin’ on.

And it looks like 2016 is going to be a banner year for me. Source Point Press will be publishing my vampire novel and Dragons Roost Press will be rereleasing an anthology of mine from 2013 – with two new stories (I hope)! I’ll be posting updates on my website as they develop. In the meantime, feel free to hit up any of the links below to check out my website, my work, or say hello!

Suzie Lockhart

Author_Suzie_Lockhart

Convinced she was destined to be an artist, Suzie Lockhart attended The Art Institute of Pittsburgh after graduating high school, but the gnawing urge to write always remained with her. She originally wanted to write romance novels, but after discovering the innate ability for macabre storytelling, Suzie embraced her inner-creepiness. When her son Bruce realized he had the same passion for writing chilling tales, they teamed up. Three years of working together have produced over thirty short stories, in a dozen paperback publications and a variety of eZines.

After building a solid reputation, they were asked by a small U.K. publisher to edit an anthology. ‘Nightmare Stalkers & Dream Walkers’ took second place in the 2013 Predators & Editors Readers Poll. Four more anthologies yielded another award for ‘Fractured Realms’, a charity anthology benefitting the Autism Trust. The duo was also featured in an article by Kurt Shaw in the Sunday Tribune Review for their work with The Art Institute of Pittsburgh’s Alumni Show last year.

Presently, ‘Team Lockhart’ is focusing their energies writing their YA novel.

EmerianRich_HorrificHistory“Prettiest Things” from the Horrific History
anthology published by Hazardous Press

“Prettiest Things” is a horror short set in American in the late 1800’s. I don’t want to ruin the surprise of telling you who the players are, but this alternate history story will have you guessing if I’ve told the real story behind these famous murders. I love the little baby vampire in this!

Book Blurb:

Evil has lurked behind the scenes since the dawn of time. Zombies in the ancient world, vampires in the Civil War, historical events big and small re-imagined Read the story behind the stories, and you’ll never look at history the same way again.
Featuring stories by Brent Abell, Pete Aldin, Jason Andrew, Monette Bebow-Reinhard, Rose Blackthorn, Rebecca L. Brown, Deborah Drake, T. Fox Dunham, Gwendolyn Edward, Aaron J. French, Tara Fox Hall, Christian A. Larsen, Ken MacGregor, Lynne MacLean, Adam Millard, Douglas J. Moore, Doug Murano, Christopher S. Nelson, Brent Nichols, Emerian Rich, Stephen D. Rogers, Julianne Snow, Cameron Suey, Jenny Twist, D. Alexander Ward, Jay Wilburn, David Williamson and Lee Clark Zumpe.

“Hammersmith House” from Horrible Disasters
anthology published by HorrorAddicts.net Press

EmerianRich_HorribleDisastersThe Horrible Disasters task was to write a horror story in which something horrific happens while the characters are also in the midst of a real natural disaster. My choice was the 1906 Earthquake and Fire in San Francisco. While the city falls into shambles around her, Maddy takes up residence in the home of a handsome man and his ailing mother. The secret she finds there, changes her life forever.

Book Blurb:

HorrorAddicts.net proudly presents Horrible Disasters. Thirteen authors from around the globe share their visions of terror set during real natural disasters throughout history. Travel back in time to earth shattering events like the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, and the Winter of Terror avalanches, 1950. What supernatural events went unnoticed? What creatures caused such destruction without remorse? Stock your emergency kit, hunker in your bunker, and prepare for… Horrible Disasters. Proceeds go to help disaster relief globally by way of the Rescue Task Force.

“The Monkey Queen” from Phobias
anthology published by Hidden Thoughts Press

EmerianRich_PhobiasThere’s nothing scarier than real life phobias. In “The Monkey Queen” I share one of my true life phobias, monkeys. It freaks me out every time I read it. If you ever wonder how someone could be scared of those cute cuddly animals, just read this and you’ll never look at monkeys the same again. They’re out for blood, people!

Book Blurb:

Over 60 million people in the United States and Great Britain are estimated to have phobias. There is no specific gene that causes phobias. While anxiety disorders and phobias may start in childhood, and children who have a parent or close relative with a specific phobia may be more likely to develop it, there is no specific situation that causes phobias. However, most people who deal with an anxiety disorder or phobia on a daily basis know they are coping with a difficulty. They know that research is ongoing, such as studies on the amygdala, the specific brain region associated with the “fight-or-flight” response. They know there are no “cures.” From beta blockers to SSRIs and MAOIs to sedatives to behavioral therapy to biofeedback to herbal remedies, there is no one solution. They also know they are not alone! On these pages, you will find eighteen stories and one poem by individuals who courageously face each day, and each night, knowing life will throw many things, both good and difficult, in their path. And yet, they go on. Read, applaud, and be grateful for your own life.

Thank you for letting me share my stories with you and
I hope you are able to enjoy some of them.

About Alice J. Black:

Alice lives and works in the North East of England where she lives with her partner and slightly ferocious cats! She writes all manner of fiction with a tendency to lean towards the dark side, but she also likes to challenge herself and write out of her genre too.  Dreams and sleep-talking are currently a big source of inspiration and her debut novel, The Doors, is a young adult novel which originally sprouted from a dream several years ago and grew from there.
