Alone
by Ela Lourenco

The stench of centuries past cling to this world, this realm that I have been exiled to. A void dimension where my only companions are the skin-scorching winds and the ravens – those foul creatures sent here to haunt my every step – gaolers, guardians of the doorway back home…
Home. The mere thought of it a dagger in my shrivelled heart. I longed for it for the first hundred years, sorrow my ever-faithful companion. I cannot even remember how nor when that sadness twisted into hatred. The Council, those self-righteous men, sentenced me to an eternity here alone; to this Gods’ forsaken place where I am pecked to pieces, my sun-blistered skin shredded into strips daily by their minion birds only to be reborn the next morn. Caught in an unending loop of pain, denied even the mercy of death.
Constant hunger follows me in this place where nothing grows. They bound my powers so I could not even accomplish the most basic task and for eons it has been thus… yet there is something they do not know. Something I have managed to hide from those carrion-feasting creatures of theirs… I am Jia of the Jikyu line, the most powerful sorceress to have ever lived, and of late, I have felt a magick within myself. It is yet but the tiny flicker of a candle, but it grows and I am patient. One day I will free myself of these chains. Once I do they will tremble in the wake of my wrath.

Lilith
by Melissa Lason

Lilith held a glass of red wine and gazed into a floor length mirror. She toasted herself and winked at the seemingly young beautiful lady staring back at her. This night had been busy and filled with hard work. Even with all her magic and strength Lilith was tired and in need of a bit of relaxation. Good thing she was prepared for just that. Again she looked upon her lovely form. It made her giggle a bit to think how surprised her prey always were. She looked so dainty and sweet. The poor fools didn’t stand a chance. Her true self was something that was inconceivable to most.
Her servant called to the mistress that bath time was prepared. Lilith sighed and removed the red silk robe she had been wearing. The smooth fabric slid off her curves. From her lavish bathroom next door a terrified scream broke the air. Lilith grinned as large talons broke the skin of her fingers. The once sweet face she had been admiring now looked more like a jackal. She strode into the beautiful white room and stood before the large porcelain tub and the fool chained beside it. With the sight of  Lilith’s  true form the poor bastard screamed again and again. The vampire queen approached him. He was near fainting when the naked beast stood before him one large talon raised beside his throat.  “Bath time” Lilith growled and opened a large vein. The tub began to collect the red steaming pools of blood and the ancient lady eased into it, achieving the relaxation she sought.

Xibalba, home of torture and sacrifice, is the kingdom of the lord of death. He stalked the night in the guise of a putrefied corpse, with the head of an owl and adorned with a necklace of disembodied eyes that hung from nerve cords. He commanded legions of shapeshifting creatures, spectral shamans, and corpses hungry for the flesh of the living. The Mayans feared him and his realm of horror. He sat atop his pyramid temple surrounded by his demon kings and demanded sacrifices of blood and beating hearts as tribute to him and his ghostly world.

These legends, along with those that lived in fear of them, have been dead and gone for centuries. Yet now, a doorway has been opened in Georgia. A group of college students seek their missing professor, a man who has secretly uncovered the answer to one of history’s greatest mysteries. However, what they find is more than the evidence of a hidden civilization. It’s also a gateway to a world of living nightmares.

SHADOW BOX
by Terri DelCampo

And there she sits on the edge of a crypt, jagged pieces of her sister and mother at her feet, after I have worked my artistry upon them.  Her doom (my triumph!) approaches: Police – and is that an actual slayer?
Only Mason appreciated my little masterpieces – shadowboxes, he dubbed them.
Paintings?  Sculptures?  Hah!  Far too pedestrian for the likes of me.
Mason sets my scene – holds her in his morbid embrace and coaxes her blood into his gut, vampire banality; correct?  But he doesn’t kill her. Just…almost. And then she is mine.
Mason lures a girl.
I lure her family – I give the desperate hope.  They scramble to meet me – offering themselves for the girl – no strings – no cops – no FBI. How can I refuse?
Just after Mason’s initial bite brings the girl to the brink of mortal death, I open a curtain before her, revealing her deepest fears – her loved ones suspended – shrieking marionettes…
…before being shaped into my art.
My palette – dull and blunted swords and battle axes – to prolong the pain of the dying, thus in turn prolonging the pain of the living.
She looks as though she’s just fed, does she not?  But alas, the only blood she swallowed was her own as I removed her tongue to a chorus of her gags, and nailed it to the back of her head.
There she sits, on the brink of death, hoping for it, but nay.
Her final torture is being captured, forced to commit her horrors to paper, and then of course, deemed completely mad, committed to some cell in some asylum.
While Mason hunts for the star of my next shadow box, miles (and decades) from the yellow tape of this one.

Muse-iam
by Lori M. Myers

Glenda stood in an unlit corner, watching me, lips edged in red, her lids covered by thick black swirl.  I smelled her perfume, heard the swish of her cloak, felt her obsession in my own as I walked from one exhibit to another, a collection of my work which, for years, I’d buried deep in backyard dirt or inside garbage bags festering at the landfill.
I owed this all to her. Her idea, her creation, my delight in seeing my prizes so beautifully displayed; some behind glass, others cordoned off by velvet ropes.  One, exhibit 6B, the foot of that screaming bank teller, my nicks and slices so perfectly perpendicular. The next, exhibit 7A, a torso torn from all it was born with, now a fleshy island nailed discreetly onto a slanted board. That torso? She’d been an executive on a business trip and got lost in my part of town. Exhibit 7B, my first man. I made sure he was small and slender, easier to restrain him that way, his disembodied head now resting atop a milliner’s pedestal.
I gazed back at Glenda, perplexed, not recognizing (or maybe forgetting all about) exhibit 8A, two arms – one from wrist to shoulder, another only to the elbow, resting on brushed velvet, still dripping blood into a crystal bowl. Certainly, the most gorgeous display in the room.  Glenda came out from the shadows, smiled at me, her aqua eyes catching the light, her trailing voile headdress covering her missing limbs.

TITLE
by Jaime Johnesee

Lightning flared in the air behind her as she walked on, mostly unflinching in her belief. The Path was the way of her clan and she knew better than to dishonor tradition by being impeded due to mortal feelings like guilt or fear. This spirit quest was one borne of darkness and she was to visit revenge on those who’d murdered her family.
Rain fell, pounding against the dry earth and swirling small dust devils around her as she walked across the dead and dusty front yards. She wasn’t evil. She’d tried to let it go. Then in court the man responsible—who’d pretended to be a victim—lied and said her husband had killed their infant son, her mother, and himself in a fit of rage.
Rage was what fueled her now as she sought to even the scales. It wasn’t justice and she didn’t try to excuse it as that. Didn’t try to justify it at all. She just walked her path and waited for him to get home.
She was passing his house for the third time when he pulled up through the driving rain. He opened the garage door with a remote from inside the car and drove in. She ran in behind him and waited in a dark corner of the garage for him to exit the vehicle.
He was the first of three involved that day. The first of three who would die by her hands for their lies. She knew her husband hadn’t been responsible. They had all lied and now those lies would bring their deaths.
She smiled her first real smile in over a year as she crept up behind him with the hatchet ready, in hand. Soon her pain would end, but first, to give them theirs.

Pieces of Love
by Elaine Pascale

“I am being torn in two,” he said sadly.  “A part of me wants to move forward with you, wants to plan a wedding and a life, but the other part–” he stopped when he saw how much he was hurting her.
She convinced him to stay.
After the wedding, she gave up her modeling career for him, gave up the celebrities that haunted Victoria’s Secret Angels, gave up her body to carry his child.
“I am being torn in two,” he said sadly.  “A part of me relishes the idea of being a father, but the other part—“ he stopped when he saw how much he was hurting her.
She convinced him to stay.
After the baby, she tattooed his name and symbols of their life together on her arm.  She created a permanent, artistic monument to their love.  He was finding love elsewhere.
“I am being torn in two,” he said sadly.  “A part of me really does still love you, still loves our family, but the other part of me loves her,” he barely stopped in time.
“You are being torn in two,” she said without much emotion.  She didn’t stop when she saw how much the hacksaw hurt him.
She no longer had to convince him of anything.

What happens when a kept woman refuses to take her ridatemp and begins thinking for herself? In If Nothing Else, Eve, We’ve Enjoyed the Fruit; she begins talking to bunches of grapes and cantaloupe that convince her to commit murder. Through her visitations with fruit, the woman learns that a gender war can be reversed by traveling back in time and eradicating the Tree of Knowledge and its villainous apples. The fruit persuade her by telling her four other stories:

Boys Will be Boys: A spa is turned into a concentration camp: just don’t ride the elevators!

Ripped to Shreds: Pregnant Jody Burkhoff’s body is changing rapidly, but not as quickly as the lupine metamorphosis of her husband. First the neighborhood animals are mutilated, then the neighbors are viciously murdered. Which proves to be more dangerous, a monstrous creature or a hormonal woman?

O: Khaki Barlow enters a pageant in which only one woman survives. She must complete tasks that are both mentally and physically daunting, all while trying to learn the meaning of the words left by the eliminated: I am here. Does she face incredible fears? Does a one-legged duck swim in a circle?

The Prison of a Man: Told as an ethnographical project, Lara Thomas researches the deaths of shoppers at a mall embedded in a small town, and encounters the legendary Goat Man.

If Nothing Else (Prologue): Readers learn the final decision in the gender war.

Grave Miracles
by Paula D. Ashe

Light thirty white candles. Set a polished human skull — aged fifty years and never buried– near them. Take a necklace from a corpse, affix a shard of amethyst to its end and tie this to your dead bride’s neck. This is for your protection.
She’ll be ravenous. Serve her the hearts of strays in a hot stew. Waste nothing. Give her the bones; she’ll suck out the marrow. Give her the brains; she’ll separate the folds and lick the fluids from her fingertips as you or I would an orange. Give her the offal; she’ll unspool those slick delicacies as if they were taffy. Perhaps, save the liver for yourself. You look like you could use the iron.
Pray nightly to the Queen of the Prickling Things. Every month, scrub down with a fetish of yourself from crooked nails, used needles, pieces of shattered cups, and dried rose stems. Don’t forget your face. She could do your back. Ensure she has eaten, first.
Some nights she will sing in a language that blackens her lips, teeth, and tongue. The blisters will heal with time. Never interrupt the song. Never interrupt the voice that responds inside your own head, unless you wish to look into God’s bloody eyes while dangling from His meathook.
Consummating the union is critical. Sex will sustain her against the elements. Sex will sustain you against yourself.
Do ‘normal’ couple things. See a film, go shopping, share a meal (probably best done at home), fight, make love, laugh, be terribly bored and boring together.
Keep your money. Bodies are expensive. I’m just a granter of grave miracles. What? Now that’s one hell of a coincidence! Yeah, come back anytime. Bring Miracle if you want.
I’d love to meet her.

The Quietus
by Delphine Boswell

Who would have guessed that I would have lived long enough to see the end, but I did. It began just as predicted. The clouds turned steel grey, thunder grumbled, and the earth began to shake the little farming community.
On the dusty road before us, a woman, with a leashed jackal at her side, seemed to appear out of nowhere. The men stopped the engines to their tractors, aproned women ran out of their houses, and children let go of the strings to their kites. People rushed to hug one another out of fright, the unknown, the anticipation.
The pale-complexioned woman with raven-colored eyes, dressed in black including an ebony veil covering part of her face, spoke, “Today is the end of times. I have come to separate the wheat from the chaff. Look into your souls. Find your most glorious of sins:  pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, sloth, for who among you does not wish to be made a god in the next world?” The long fingers of her hand motioned. “Come, come.”
People looked at each other.  Soon, five or six stepped apart from the crowd, then twelve, twenty. Finally, dozens began to push and shove, knocking others to the ground, screaming, their teeth gnashing, saliva dripping, a cacophony of voices, a crescendo of screams.
The woman spoke again, “Will not the others of you follow? Have you not ever eaten of the forbidden fruit?”
Left standing was a small group of women who covered their faces in horror. The men stood stiff and in shock. A few children wept, now mere orphans.
A downpour of rain fell over the land. With the woman and the carnivore, the sinners walked toward town until they no longer could be seen, disappearing into a dense haze.
