The River
by Rie Sheridan Rose
.It’s a scar through
the countryside.
Banks like lacerated flesh…
Water with whitecaps
wending their way
Downstream to the ocean.
It’s a beautiful demon
that calls my name
as I stand here on the brink.
The brink of what,
I sometimes wonder.
The water whispers madness,
and I understand it.
I speak its language.
It whispers and calls
from the depths of time.
It dares me to join it,
and—God help me—I want to.
Every day I stand upon the brink.
Every day I inch a little closer.
Every day I wonder…
is today the day?
The day I step forward?
The day I join the river?
The day I…
die?
