When the Universe Only Knows
by Melissa R. Mendelson
The universe knew what I was walking into,
but I didn’t.
I had no idea
as I opened a door
that I would never be able
to step back out of,
and that door slammed shut.
And that cold breeze
was the universe just sighing
because of everything that would head my way,
but all I saw was an obstacle,
red tape, barbed wire
blocking me from where I thought I should go.
And when that door did slightly open,
I should have grabbed it and jumped
to the other side,
but I didn’t.
And the horrors came,
and I almost didn’t survive.
Now, I am frozen,
standing on the dead ground beneath me,
wondering if I would ever find my way again.
Will the universe guide me,
or has it left me behind?
