Mirror Moon
by Alex Grehy
Oh moon, so cool, so lovely,
taking the day’s light from the
far side of the world and
gifting it to my night.
.
How I trusted you.
.
Oh moon, defusing the sun’s
furnace glow, cooling its
burning torch, softening to
diffuse white its yellow inferno.
.
I thought you were eternal.
.
Oh moon, peaceful in dusty dormancy,
forced to ignite in the sun’s reddening fury
as its own death drew near, expanding
like an indrawn breath, ready to roar.
.
I thought you could resist.
.
Oh moon, caught in the sun’s death throes,
your surface melted to glass, brilliant, a
convex mirror, you shone brighter, larger.
We flocked to witness your enhanced beauty.
.
I thought you would bless the darkness.
.
Oh moon, radiant mirror, silvered, wide focus reflecting
both light and fierce heat, excoriating,
wrapping the globe in fire. All we experienced
was the burning, all we witnessed was the end.
.
Oh moon, I thought you were my friend.

Alex Grehy (she/her) enjoys writing quirky, thought-provoking horror. Widely published, her latest collection of short stories, Thoughts, Prayers and Other Curses is disturbing, clever and darkly entertaining – a wickedly imaginative journey through ten stories where time and technology have given humankind the chance to be kind, but why bother when there’s always an option to be beastly?

Beautiful poem. I loved it. 🥰
An exquisite poem.
Moving, excellent as always.
