Taking a Break

the last thing she saw:
sunset on the open road
and no horizon.
she didn’t hear it—
iron hooves on hot asphalt
breath that hissed like steam…
she didn’t smell it—
desert sand, decay and death
the scent of the end…
she didn’t see it—
tongue lolling from snap trap jaws
craving bone to crack…
a bumper sticker
slapped on like a prophecy:
I brake for cryptids…
… and break she did.
