Picture-Prompt Writing Challenge!

Eye Witness Testimony

by Rie Sheridan Rose

It was a shit hole…but it was our shit hole. The station had been abandoned decades ago, so we took it for our own. We tagged the walls with our colors and handles, and spent the nights drinking and dancing around the fire pit.
It could have gone on forever, but Crystal had to ruin it. She brought that book—no one knows…knew…where she got it. It was ancient, covered in some gnarly leather that stank to high heaven. Its pages were covered in brown ink in words that no one could read. I don’t think even Crystal could, though she claimed differently.
“Let’s have some fun!” she burbled last night, calling everyone into a circle.
I hung back in the shadows. I wanted no part of the bitch, or her book. So I saw.
They all stood in a circle right there—see, where the hole is…
Crystal started chanting some weird shit, and then her eyes rolled back to whites. Her voice grew deeper and deeper. A stench seeped from the floor. And the ground started to shake.
A grinding, growling howl rose from deep in the earth. I covered my ears with my hands. It was horrifying—like all the souls of the damned screaming…it’s hard to explain right.
Suddenly, the floor exploded—right there—and tentacles writhed in the air like whips.
They latched onto Crystal first, and then the others, and dragged them down through that hole. I managed to dodge behind a pillar until the screaming stopped, and then I called you.
Honest, Officer. That’s what happened. I’m the only one left. Now, it’s a Hell Hole…

More from Author Rie Sheridan Rose:

“I have always preferred the supernatural in tales of horror, the knot between life and death. Rie Sheridan Rose’s Skellyman is cool and creepy. Her first horror novel is a chilling read.” — Charlee Jacob – Stoker winner, Best novel, “Dread in the Beast”
