The Ladies of Horror
Hunted
by M.L. Roos
The rocks unwrapped themselves from the cold shrouds of the nebulous mist. Viktor watched it rise and nausea bubbled up his throat. He broke out in an icy sweat and stumbled back to the cave.
“Hurry! The children. We have no time. Run. Run now!” Viktor yelled as Marta picked up the baby and grabbed Yuri by the hand.
Her face, white as paper, she looked at Viktor. “But I thought we were safe. I thought it was done.”
“I don’t think it will ever be done, Marta. We cannot out run it. I thought we could, but we just can’t. Not with the little ones.”
“There is no hope, Viktor?” whispered Marta, tears rolling down her face.
Viktor and Marta grabbed the children, and ran along the shore. With each step, the anger grew in Viktor. After all this time, how can we still be hunted, he thought. Have they learned nothing?
“Faster Marta. The mist will be gone in minutes. We have no more time!” he shouted.
Marta stopped. “Viktor. No more. I will not run. I will rip them to shreds if I have to, but I will no longer run. If they want to kill me, let them. You take the kids andgo. Start over somewhere else.”
“Marta”…Viktor sighed and knew it was the only way for the children to survive. He threw both children on his back. In the distance he heard the shouts of the people. He saw Marta run up the hill. She let out a roar that made the hairs stand up on Viktor’s neck.
“Don’t worry, loves. I will get us to safety where we will be safe to roam. I hear there are many of us out there.”
Marta’s was the last wolf howl to be heard in England.
