The Ladies of Horror
Draven pulled the collar of his pea coat up to block the bite of the wind. The fog hung heavy around him, nearly obscuring the moon above. But through the trees he glimpsed its bright promise, and his senses tingled. He glanced ahead, quickening his step. It wouldn’t do to let his quarry draw too far forward. And what a beautiful target she was, his Alicia. He’d followed her for the last three weeks and had her memorized—the curve of her cheek, the lilt of her laugh, the faint lisp lingering in her speech. He knew where she went and with whom. Knew the way a stray curl escaped her ponytail to caress her cheek when she worked on her computer late at night. And yet, she understood nothing more about him then that he made her morning latte just the way she liked—full caff, shot of espresso, steamed almond milk, no whip.
She walked deeper into the trees, fearless it seemed. He sighed. The time was almost upon them. He tried to recall a line from the movie The Wolfman, something about how even a man pure of heart can become a wolf when the moon is bright. He shook his head. He wasn’t pure, but he was a wolf, stalking his victim, pouncing. Not a real werewolf, of course, those didn’t exist, but he thought himself as close as you could come.
A break in the fog allowed the moon to shine down, full, bright. Exhilaration built in Draven’s chest and he strode forth purposefully, eating up the paces between Alicia and him. But, she stopped. Pushed her coat from her shoulders and turned. Before his eyes, prey became the hunter as he stared at the beautiful white wolf she’d become.
