Women in Horror Month 2016 – Featured Author: Elaine Pascale @doclaney #WiHM7

Elaine Pascale

Author_Elaine_Pascale

Elaine Pascale has been writing for most of her life. She took a break from fiction in order to give birth to two children, who are far too attractive to carry her DNA, and to complete a doctoral dissertation. She lives on Cape Cod, MA, with her husband, son and daughter, a variety of pets, and a semi-fictional Minotaur. She teaches a smorgasbord of courses at a private university in Boston: from English Composition and Communications to a Vampire Seminar. Her writing has been published in anthologies and magazines. She is the author of If Nothing Else, Eve, We’ve Enjoyed the Fruit, and is also the author of the nonfiction book: Metamorphosis: Identity Outcomes in International Student Adaptation–A Grounded Theory Study. Her writing will be featured in two new anthologies in 2016 and she has been contracted by a publisher to release a novella in the very near future. Her impending plans include: rescuing more animals, writing more stories, and becoming a professional tiger cage cleaner.

If Nothing Else, Eve, We’ve Enjoyed the Fruit

ElainePascale_IfNothingElseEveWeveEnjoyedTheFruitWhat happens when a kept woman refuses to take her ridatemp and begins thinking for herself? In If Nothing Else, Eve, We’ve Enjoyed the Fruit; she begins talking to bunches of grapes and cantaloupe that convince her to commit murder. Through her visitations with fruit, the woman learns that a gender war can be reversed by traveling back in time and eradicating the Tree of Knowledge and its villainous apples. The fruit persuade her by telling her four other stories:

Boys Will be Boys: A spa is turned into a concentration camp: just don’t ride the elevators!

Ripped to Shreds: Pregnant Jody Burkhoff’s body is changing rapidly, but not as quickly as the lupine metamorphosis of her husband. First the neighborhood animals are mutilated, then the neighbors are viciously murdered. Which proves to be more dangerous, a monstrous creature or a hormonal woman?

O: Khaki Barlow enters a pageant in which only one woman survives. She must complete tasks that are both mentally and physically daunting, all while trying to learn the meaning of the words left by the eliminated: I am here. Does she face incredible fears? Does a one-legged duck swim in a circle?

The Prison of a Man: Told as an ethnographical project, Lara Thomas researches the deaths of shoppers at a mall embedded in a small town, and encounters the legendary Goat Man.

If Nothing Else (Prologue): Readers learn the final decision in the gender war.

Expiration Date

ElainePascale_ExpirationDateThis new anthology focuses on the what-ifs of the “end-dates” that surround us, and how they impact our lives and our world, and ourselves.

“Modern lives seem littered with expiration dates” says anthology editor Nancy Kilpatrick. “Packaging tells us when our food will go bad; when we can expect appliances to cease functioning; when contracts for the internet finish! But as annoying as these small expiration dates are, they fade to nothing compared to the larger events: when a species goes extinct; when a body of water evaporates, or dies because the PH balance alters; when giant icebergs break apart and glaciers melt forever, threatening the ecosystem of this planet.”

Kilpatrick reminds us “From the micro to the macro in terms of expirations, we are faced with the one termination with which we are all too familiar — the up-close-and-personal end of life for each of us and for the ones we love. It?s the personal that terrifies us most because it feels the most real.”

Expiration Date features 25 original pieces of short fiction by some of the world’s top Dark Fiction writers.

Zombies: Shambling Through the Ages

ElainePascale_ZombiesShamblingThroughThe AgesIt’s a wonder humanity ever survived into the twenty-first century. Even Neanderthals knew to bury the dead beneath stones to prevent corpses from rising. Ancient civilizations feared slain warriors would return from battlefields, medieval physicians worried that bodies would rise from plague pits, many cultures buried the dead at crossroads to prevent the dead from walking.

In Zombies: Shambling Through the Ages, editor Steve Berman has collected stories that reveal the threat of revenants and the living dead is far from recent. From the Bronze Age to World War II, this anthology guides us through millennia of thrills, chills, kills, carnage, horror, and havoc wreaked throughout history by the walking dead.

Women in Horror Month 2016 – Featured Author: Eden Royce @EdenRoyce #WiHM7

Eden Royce

Bio: Eden Royce is descended from women who practiced root, a type of conjure magic in her native Charleston, South Carolina. She now lives in Kent, The Garden of England, and writes Gothic horror and dark fantasy tales based on her childhood (and a few weird dreams). Featured in her work are the language and traditions of the Gullah-Geechees, descendants of the first slaves brought to the sea islands off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia.

EdenRoyce_SevenMagpies

Eden is one of the writers for The 7 Magpies project, a first of its kind: a short horror film anthology written and directed entirely by black women. She is also the horror submissions editor for Mocha Memoirs Press where she conceived and edited The Grotesquerie, an anthology of twenty-one horror short stories written by women. She also writes a regular feature for Graveyard Shift Sisters, a site dedicated to purging the black female horror fan from the margins, where she interviews black female authors of dark fiction and reviews their latest work.

Blerd Book Club chose her Southern Gothic horror collection, Spook Lights, as their October book of the month. Listen to her chat with them about the inspiration for the stories, give a few translations of Gullah words, and mention her upcoming projects. Spooky Lights: Southern Gothic Horror

EdenRoyce_SpookyLightsPull up a rocking chair and sit a spell. Soak in these twelve tales of Southern Gothic horror:

Sinister shopkeepers whose goods hold the highest price, a woman’s search for her mother drags her into the binding embrace of a monster, a witchdoctor’s young niece tells him a life-altering secret, an investigator who knows how to keep a 100% confession rate….

These are stories where the setting itself becomes a character—fog laced cemeteries, sulfur rich salt marshes—places housing creatures that defy understanding and where the grotesque and macabre are celebrated.

The stories are rich in flavor and clever in metaphor, the horrors completely surreal or—far more unnerving—all too possible. She brings a refreshing perspective to the table that paranormal lovers are sure to enjoy.

Women in Horror Month 2016 – Featured Author: Lisa Vasquez @unsaintly #WiHM7

Lisa Vasquez

Author_Lisa_Vasquez

Born and raised in Chicago, Lisa’s love for horror began at a young age. Her father had a deep love for horror movies and science fiction, and took a keen interest in special effects. So that Lisa and her siblings could enjoy the movies with him he’d sit up late at night taking on the painstaking task of “editing” the explicit adult scenes. Afterwards, they’d sit together and discuss the magic of how the effects were achieved. When other kids her age dressed in cartoon-kid-friendly costumes for Halloween, Lisa created homemade costumes that paid homage to classics like “Bride of Frankenstein”. Thanks to her creative parents (her mother also having a talent for artistic expression such as homemade crafts, sewing, and interior decorating) Lisa was encouraged to read, write and to act in homemade skits to entertain themselves, family and close friends.

Lisa currently resides in Katy, Texas. She is the Publisher’s Liaison for the Horror Writer’s Association, and is also the founder of the HWA’s Houston chapter. She is the owner of Stitched Smile Publications, a small independent publishing company, and is the author of The Unsaintly Chronicles, The Unfleshed, and several other short stories.

Women in Horror Month 2016 – Featured Author: A. Giacomi @thepoeticzombie #WiHM7

A Giacomi

Author_A_Giacomi

A. Giacomi, otherwise known as the Poetic Zombie is an author and educator from Toronto, Canada, with a love for the written word as well as a zombie enthusiast. She’s been a zombie fan from a very young age, so it’s no wonder that her first venture into authordom led her straight to the zombie genre.

She has been a fan of the horror genre since she could pick up a novel. Giacomi is inspired by many authors such as Poe, Stine, Rice, King, and Harris, just to name a few. She loves a good scary tale with quirky elements and tends to stick to the classic horror formula and tradition that had her hooked as a child. Giacomi has always loved classic horror monsters like vampires, werewolves and above all zombies. Although these monsters have been seen in literature and movies countless times now, they never bore her and she always finds a way to breathe new life into these characters.

She currently has book 1 and 2 of The Zombie Girl Saga out from Permuted Press. You can get them anywhere ebooks are sold. The story centers around Eve, a teenager infected with the Azrael Virus, a very ancient strain of zombie virus unlike any you’ve ever seen on television or in films. This virus slowly turns its victims into the undead, but not without a few perks along the way. You can argue that Eve is a sort of undead superhero, but at the heart of the series, the story is all about human will, and the refusal to let death win.

Where does Giacomi get her inspiration from? From zombie films of course, but she’s also a self-proclaimed fangirl. She’s in love with comics, Spiderman being her favourite hero, anything Tim Burton, Star Wars, Walking Dead, Sailor Moon, and a huge fan of Halloween and horror films. To say her tastes are all over the map is an understatement, but it’s what makes her writing unique and filled with pop culture references that any pop culture junkie would appreciate.

Fright Mare – Women Write Horror

BillieSueMosiman_FrightMareWomenWriteHorrorWomen write horror and have written it since before Mary Shelley wrote FRANKENSTEIN. This anthology is to highlight the fact women write great horror and to kill the fallacy that they aren’t in some way up to standard. They are. Read here stories by Elizabeth Massie, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Lucy Taylor, and a plethora of other great writers as they work on your nerves, get inside your head, and bang out some of the scariest tales written today. I’m proud to present these women for your consideration, as Rod Serling might say, as I ask you to step into FRIGHT MARE. Lock the door and windows, put on a light, and remember, it’s not real. It’s not real. Midnight awaits, monsters scheme to take you away, the strange and weird wait in the shadows, but it’s not real. Is it?

Edited by Billie Sue Mosiman, the author who brought you the SINISTER-TALES OF DREAD collections and her latest suspense novel, THE GREY MATTER.

Available on Amazon

The Grey Matter

BillieSueMosiman_TheGreyMatterThe mountains of DeKalb County, Alabama were majestic, tranquil, inspiring and isolated. Just the type of place a man like John Grey would choose to call home. A land where he was king of all he surveyed. A land where he could be God himself, if he chose to be. Until those kids moved into the cabin below the ridge.

It had been perfect at first for the four young people. Friends since their broken childhoods, now they stood together at the threshold of adulthood. They were a family by choice, not by nature. When supplies dwindled and society failed, so did the rules of civilization and the mountain closed in. Not all predators walk on four legs.

THE GREY MATTER is a novel of white-hot suspense where life is unpredictable and survival is paramount. Who is a friend and who’s the enemy?

The Dark Mister Snark

LoriRLopez_TheDarkMisterSnarkThere are those individuals we know little about who skulk and creep delightfully across page or screen. In reality, we are taught to avoid them. Sometimes, however, they may surprise us. The Dark Mister Snark is such a figure. Beware!

“Candidly lurking in the shadiest of places, a fellow whose mask wore the gruesomest faces, the dark Mister Snark might be tiptoeing after — shunning the sun and the mirthfullest laughter, spying and shying from your backward stares, following to catch you in complete unawares!”

Narrated by witty rhymes that spin the tangled threads of solitude and acceptance, this book tells the tale of a mysterious man prone to stalking through shadows. Is he misunderstood or mad? A villain or an anti-hero?

His secrets will be revealed in humorous and touching verse, with Halloween and Edgar Allan Poe among the themes. You will not look at corn or crows the same. And once read, you could find Mister Snark watching you from every dark place! Available in E-book format. Look for an illustrated print edition featuring peculiar artwork by the author, Lori R. This horror fable is based on an actual environmental hazard along the Mexican border and the potential for disaster.

6. Macabre: A young woman’s dream of independence is challenged when her parents depart and she must face her Night Frights. But she is never completely alone, for always the rickety windmill’s presence haunts her. And what is in the house with her, playing games, chewing the furniture? Will she ever be able to outrun her fears?

7. Horrendus: A demonic entity will return at Midnight on All Hallows Eve to claim the lives of a child from each family. A young woman scoffs at the legend and invokes the monster’s rage. She must face the truth and stand up to him alone to save her village.

8. Backlash: A very troubled man seeks professional help for his hang-ups, compulsions and phobias. But who needs help more, him or the doctor?

9. Fossil: Wellsby Manor has a history of bloodshed, built upon the grave of an evil entity who tormented and ate Stone Age humans then infected the soil for ages. His brutal presence inhabits the mansion, terrifying and slaughtering its occupants. Tobias Pallberry now intends to conduct a seance to contact the spirits of the dead. Those who attend must face a wild night of fright as The Bone Man awakens.

10. Chameleon: A furious woman tracks down the other girlfriends of the guy who broke her heart. A morality tale about a “Prince Charming” whose charm is spread a little thin. Some people just aren’t who they seem . . .

11. The Lycaning: PARTS ONE AND TWO: This is not your traditional wolfman tale. An inventive and original take on a horror classic, THE LYCANING creates a new breed of the monster and a society transformed by a Werewolf Apocalypse. PART TWO delves deeper into the origins of character and plot. Secrets are revealed. Werewolves, humans, and were-zombies clash.

12. Unnatural: A Thin Man wanders into a world of trouble after the carnival that was his home goes bust. Adrift and alone, missing his sideshow friends, things get pretty freaky when he accepts a job for a doctor who isn’t as nice as he seems. The oddities in his barn may bite!

13. Bloodpath: After striking something in the road with his truck, a man follows drops of blood through the forest to a mysterious settlement. Will he be able to save the young woman held prisoner by a primitive band of creatures with large feet?

Ben Jameson is a bitter retiree residing at Willow Manor, a home for the aged or those in need of care, and has nothing more to do than await the inevitable conclusion of a life wasted. Forgotten by his family, his days are marked by the solitary existence of books, loneliness, and regret.

A chance meeting with a terminally ill resident named Nora, and her unshakeable optimism in the face of her eventual demise, rekindles emotions he was certain were gone forever. Nora reawakens his ability to love, and with her compassion and her companionship, he comes to realize that even a life as wasted as his own can be salvaged and, given the right incentive, is still worth living.

As Nora’s health declines, they both dare to hope that the magic of a strange pendant Ben purchased from an antique shop as a gift for Nora will overcome the odds, offering them more time with one another.
