Offspring
by Suzie Lockhart

Sunlight glistened off the water as I reclined on the dock, feeling thankful to be alive as I watched my grandchildren letting out whoops of joy. My son-in-law was in his speedboat, pulling them from behind in inner tubes.
It was the happiest I’d felt since my partner, Donald had died suddenly last year from a massive stroke.
My cell phone vibrated in my pocket.
I recognized the number instantly, and contemplated not answering.
 “Abe speaking.”
“Hello, Abraham.” Cassandra Moxie’s cool voice came across the line. “I’m afraid this isn’t a personal call.”
“I’m retired, remember,” I stated flatly, waving at my grandkids. “Surely you have an agent that can handle whatever is going on.”
“Not this time, Abraham. Not many agents remember what it was like to work for the FBI when things started, 35 years ago.”
Unfortunately, Moxie had my attention.
She had to be wrong.
“What’s happened?” I asked.
“Can I send you the pictures from the crime scene?” she asked.
I hesitated for a moment. “Sure.”
“Call me back.”
I waited for a few moments for Moxie to send the photos. I tried looking at them objectively, but that was hard to do.
The carnage did, indeed, look much like the attacks from the infected I’d seen as a rookie agent. Instead of the grotesque monstrosities that had attacked the living—before a vaccine was discovered which reversed the process—a group of young adults sat amidst a macabre setting of candles and skulls.
A familiar-looking girl sat in the center. Long brown hair hid half her face; spidery veins covered the porcelain skin on the other half, with blood and gore trickling down from the corner of her pouty lips. Her dark eyes were blank.
Bile rose in my throat as I recognized Donald’s daughter…

Dark Lady
by Naching T. Kassa

The rule of the universe is feed or bleed. So it has been. So shall it ever be.
Dark Lady, ageless in beauty and infinite in wisdom, knew the rule. Cawdor Thane believed in it.
Thane walked the earth as though he were a god demanding worship. Dark Lady wouldn’t bend a knee to such as he.
When he called her to the tower, she did not come for his sake. She came at destiny’s call.
Four cloaked magicians accompanied Dark Lady as she entered the fortress. Small wounds marked three pricked thumbs. Only one remained unblemished.
At the top of the stronghold, three of the witches halted outside the primary chamber. Dark Lady entered the room, attended only by the fourth, and found Thane standing before a wall of glass. He didn’t turn when she entered.
“Did I win?” he asked.
“No,” she replied.
“You said I would.”
“I didn’t.”
Thane slammed a fist against the window. “You did. You said, ‘The victor will stand over the vanquished while a raven consumes his entrails.’ ”
“You are not the victor.”
He turned, his face scarlet.
“Do you see that flag down there? The raven is my standard. The eagle belongs to the enemy. See how they dwindle?” He crossed to her and his fetid breath warmed her face. “I conquer and I cannot die.”
“Death comes for you.”
“How? Only one not of woman born can harm me.”
“You are the vanquished. Meet the victor.”
Dark Lady’s companion threw off his cloak. Duff, the avenger, stood in the magician’s place. Sword raised, he rushed forward and pierced the black heart.
Thane fell. When he hit the floor, Dark Lady transformed. Wings raised, she leaped upon him.
Thane bled.
Hecate fed.

Yŭka Io
by H.R. Boldwood

She is Yŭka Io, guardian of the abyss, who rises before the blazing sun of Tyber stirs the electric sky.
War hammer in hand, she begins her trek across the parched clay soil, feeling it crack underfoot, hearing the brittle ‘snap’ beneath her feet. The sound reminds her of breaking china — the china her mother used before the orbital tilt of Tyber replaced elegance and civility with misery and death.
She does not walk alone. Her feathered legion, dark and fearless, soars through the forever storm, riding the lightning and climbing the currents at her beck and call. Ever vigilant, their eyes scan the void for the heinous monsters loosed by the ever-widening fissure.
Together, Yŭka Io and her winged warriors hold the beasts of the chasm at bay — dark, demonic leviathans that lay in wait, sheltering in the abyss.  They watch and listen. When the time is right, they emerge in search of their prey — the innocents of Tyber.
The sentinel stands watch at the edge of the void, her airborne minions ever ready.  She is the wall between good and evil. She is the space between the dark and the light.
She is Yŭka Io, guardian of the abyss, who rises before the blazing sun of Tyber stirs the electric sky.

Write Her Story

wihm_2017_03
Bachelor
by Julianne Snow

She raised her glass in covenant, wanting him to both notice her but not see her. The emotions swirled through her body—her heart was entwined with who he had become, and what he would make her should she be chosen. But her head still warred with the frailty of her affection—she knew he was bad news and nothing good would come of any relationship between the two of them.
Charisma. It oozed from him, the others consuming it as if it were a drug. The days of waiting, of wanting, of left waning in the wings had begun to take toll. She was tired yes, but still concealed a little fight in her soul. The others could not see it; had not seen it—for their eyes stayed glued to the chiseled chin and raven curls that framed his handsome face.
As the sweet red wine passed over her lips and tongue, her eyes were drawn to one of the others—a brazen whore who left nothing to the imagination. Her hands were on him, touching what wasn’t hers to touch. Anger, as red as the wine flashed across her vision, the hammering of blood in her ears was thunderous.
And then there was silence. His beautiful face held a consuming look. But not one of longing. Panic. Unadulterated horror. As his eyes swept past her face and down her outstretched arm, sound returned.
Screams reverberated off the twinkling crystal stemware. Sobbing was swallowed by the lush upholstery of the set. A strangled choking gurgle wafted from the lips of the whore who had tried to best her, her neck displaying her newest trinket—the round foot of a wine glass.

End of the Line
by Lisa Lane

She had known this night would come. It had only been a matter of time. The adversary had been relentless, ever reminding her that the hunter was also the hunted. The witch’s charm had staved him off, but his magic had proven more powerful. She’d let down her guard, let herself love. How could she know he’d go so far to ensure her end? That a man could toy so cruelly with her emotions… that a man might poison himself before he gave himself to her, sacrifice himself to destroy this perceived evil?
She died alone.

The Tryst
by E.A. Black

There had always been something a bit off about Lianne Reynolds. She laughed at the wrong moments, and there seemed to be a deep hunger in her interactions with Brian Leonard. You know the saying – never stick your dick in crazy. Brian had broken off his affair with her two years ago when he caught her cheating on him – with her now dead lover. Three days ago, Lianne was in the car with the man during the crash but she survived. Brian wondered how. She hardly had a scratch on her. The car was totaled and her lover was mangled beyond recognition.
On a whim, Brian called her to express his condolences and to his delight she invited him to her flat. He planned to do to her what she had done to him – use her for a hot night of sex and then abandon her. Within a few hours he found himself sitting beside her. Despite his caution, he couldn’t resist her beautiful face. The allure of her porcelain skin and deep-set eyes was irresistible. Those blood red lips beckoned him to come a little closer. What could it hurt to relive the old times and then toss her aside? She’d learn how badly she hurt him.
In moments she was in his arms, so close he could see the pulse fluttering in her throat. He had her at last! Then her black lace gown opened to reveal a huge gaping maw of sharp dagger teeth and a blackened tongue the size of a python.  Her lovely head dangled like a lure above the mouth of a deep-sea angler fish. She stank of rotten seaweed and dead carp. Before he could back away, the jaws slammed shut, trapping him inside as her bobbing head cackled a guttural laugh.

A Late Night Embrace
by E. A. Black

I lay on my side in bed in the dark as my wife’s kisses fluttered along the back of my neck.
“Mmm. You feel good,” I said. I turned to face her but she pressed her hand against my shoulder, keeping me facing away from her. I liked the little games she played. What surprise would she have in store for me tonight?
One cool hand caressed my chest and then danced down my belly until she reached me and began to stroke. I groaned with pleasure, writhing as I enjoyed her late night embrace, and then I remembered she had died a month earlier.

Corvidae
by Eden Royce

It was the mask that brought the crows. Thieving little monsters. Their beaks poking, jabbing, stealing bits of my flesh, caws triumphant. Carrion crows.
“I’m still alive, you bastards!”
At least I think I am. Behind the porcelain mask, I can’t see myself, my eyes. Only forward. I hear my breathing. Or is that the breeze from the flapping of wings? The hair attached to the mask is real, human, the same inky, silken black of the birds
My skin grows back each time they pick me clean. Each time, it is different in color and in texture. Every inch of me exposed to their horn-like beaks. Except for what the mask covers. I must look as I did when I put it on, but I have not seen in an age.
Get up, I tell myself. Or the mask tells me.
You wished for power, for fame once. Fool you. Get up. You have a wasteland to cross. For it is you who brings the storm. You bring death. In this body that is picked clean each day by crows. Let them feed.
Soon, it will be your turn.

Y’all gather round for thirteen more tales of Southern Gothic horror:

Boys find evil in their favorite sweet treat, a perfume shop that makes more than scents, a hurricane carries a mother’s vengeance, a conjure woman lies dying, unable to name a successor…

This is Gothic horror Southern style—shadowy rice fields, creatures that assume humanity at will—where even the most damaged and delicate have their power.

Spook Lights II takes us again South with stories that are graceful in the telling, and beautifully edgy in their details. Humans and haints traverse historic land in search of magic and revenge, finding salvation and justice in unexpected ways; each tale unwinds magnificently in Royce’s hands.
—Linda D. Addison, award-winning author of “How to Recognize a Demon Has Become Your Friend”

“Eden Royce’s collection of Southern Gothic fiction is an elegant and haunting read. Her stories filled with the kind of quiet chills born of things glimpsed mostly from the corner of the eye. From the genius of ‘To-Do List’ (just try to forget this tale once you reach its ending!) to the landscape she has created in the house of secrets known as Azaleas Hall, in Spook Lights 2 Ms. Royce has created an experience—and one of those favorite books likely to be enjoyed over and over again.”

End of Days
by A.F. Stewart

An eternity in darkness.
Each hour haunted by my memories, those heady days as the Fallen.
Those beautiful days of blood and death, of exquisite freedom. When I whispered malice into human ears, destroyed their settlements, watched their budding civilizations fall. I strode this earth an unassailable titan, and everywhere my name was feared.
I ruled this world.
Why couldn’t you let me be?
I turned my face to the heavens. “Hear me, my brethren!”
You jealous, spiteful creatures. Oh, how I hate you!
“You, with your morality, your duty, your righteous war!”
You broke my heart.
“You took everything from me! I spat in the face of your betrayal, screamed as you toppled my reign! Still you came for me, deaf to my howls for mercy. You imprisoned me, but my influence lingered, didn’t it? You couldn’t even erase my name!”
I sighed, and my eyes flickered downward, away from the stars. They were not worth my breath.
Yet… to have seen those years, watched their futility in fighting my legacy. Their senseless struggle to protect humankind. Flawed, naive humanity.
Such delicious poetic justice, that. They locked me away to save them, yet the humans freed me.
This very eve.
Can you see me brethren, basking in the moonlight? Do you know?
This time it will not matter. Already, I embraced my liberty. I savoured the sensation of possessing the woman, rejoicing as her soul screamed. I delighted in her helpless terror as I killed her friends, as she watched her own hands murder them.
Priceless joy.
Now I sip their blood from her wine glass. My first taste of destruction, my first act of revenge. Not my last.
I am Lucifer.
I will burn this world, and the heavens above, to ash.
They will all pay.

Snowflake
by AR Neal

My codename is Snowflake, given to me by the Elders who thought it would be fitting. My mission was simple – infiltrate and eliminate the enemy, by any means necessary. For our kind, that usually means by feeding, since that is what most ghouls do. My smile, long hair, and alabaster skin was instantly desired by those greedy men in power. Despite the newness of their offices, they succumbed to my advances quickly and threw decorum out the window. Not that he ever cared about decorum anyway. The Elders, pleased at my success, prepared to lead the nation in a new direction. In the meantime, I have a first-class ticket and an appointment with a top government official on the other side of the world. My codename is Snowflake, and my job is to help my kind make the world great again.

Life in the Floating City uses the songs of musician/producerThomas Dolby’s 2011 studio album Map of the Floating City as a framework for the story of Anderson Brown, husband, friend, and attorney, who lives on the Floating City, a place that serves as a pit stop on the edge of the Sombrero Galaxy for interstellar explorers, transport ships, and leisure travelers.

Anderson and his wife, Caroline (who is having an affair with Anderson’s best friend, Herbert) take an airship trip, during which there is an accident and Caroline is lost. Upon his return to the Floating City, Anderson must face legal proceedings and questions – there are suspicions that he did not do all he could to ensure Caroline’s safety, particularly in light of her sizeable estate. Herbert does what he can to help Anderson move forward, which includes taking him to meet an eccentric pair of scientists who synthesize a hallucinogenic drug from a certain breed of frog. During the trip, Anderson meets Simone, who becomes the love of his life. by Emerian Rich

Betrayed by love, her sentence dealt centuries of imprisonment in the perfumed soil far below the revered sands. A cage for the body, but not her active mind. Incarcerated in a tomb, the smell of incense choking all thoughts of escape, she simmered.
Time passed and voices above spoke of greatness. Awe. Majesty. They did not know the tomb equaled Hell. Her freedom unreachable in a prison of gold and bitumen, she bided her time as worshippers floundered above.
And yet, through the edifice of false grandeur, an innocent mind wandered. Perhaps just of age, this beauty of fine form, ignorant of her exquisiteness, roamed near the Queen’s entrapment. Minds of men in the vicinity sent images of flesh and fantasy, pushing the Queen into wild envy. The girl’s unspoiled womanhood tantalized like the sight of the Queen’s once young pharaoh lover.
A deep breath of noxious, stale air, and the Queen left her mortal carcass. Soaring up, up, up, in search of that perfect form befitting her station. Her spirit seeped into the skin of the poor creature like an acidic flesh-eating plague. The maiden struggled for her body, but not hard enough. The Queen dominated, pushing out her innocent spirit without much fight.
The Queen’s first breath of fresh air in a millennia sent a ripple through her limbs as her essence pressed in to all the dark crevices of the stunning young body. A smile creased her new lips as the echo of the poor maiden’s soul found the mortal remains of the Queen’s casted off chamber. The new world was the Queen’s for the taking and no one would stop her again.
