The Sale
by Selah Janel

“It’s gonna need a lotta upkeep,” the realtor warned. Most had run away by now.
“Seems to be in pretty good shape. Though I’ll definitely be making some additions.” She walked through the lounge, pausing to perch on a lush, but dusty chair. The middle-aged man tried to keep from cringing as she made herself at home, practically prancing from the web-covered planter to the end tables so she could click on the lamps. “Very homey, isn’t it?”
“If you say so,” he mumbled. There was something about her enthusiasm that was unsettling, even if she did have money and charisma. “You say you’re hoping to reopen as an inn?”
“Of course. It’s perfect, after all. Can’t see why it went bust in the first place.”
“People these days like modern places.” He should have been pushing harder, but something in her face unnerved him.
“Not my kind of people.” Her lips quirked up. “It’s perfect for a themed mysterious mansion sort of vibe.”
“Ah, events then? Like murder mysteries?” He relaxed a bit; she was likely an actor.
“The best murders usually are.” She grinned. “That’s a joke, by the way. Does this fireplace work?”
He was being silly. Make the sale, stupid! “Not that one, but there are some others that do. That’s mostly for décor, it’s hollow behind it.”
She grinned and the lamplight cast strange shadows on her face. “Lovely.”
Small talk. Make small talk! “You said your relatives used to run hotels? You’re a Hilton?”
“Close, but no. I come from the Holmes’.”
“Like the detective?”
Another smile, but this one was calm and satisfied. “Something like that. I believe you have yourself a sale. You simply must be one of the first guests when I open. Now let’s sign those papers.”

Spectral Perfume
by Marge Simon

Her cloak thrown carelessly on the chair,
a field of rolling velvet hills where
up and down spiders swarm,
drawn to a decanter tinged
with garnet — Muguet from Paris,
created at the first of World War I,
and none to follow for a year –
the survivors might as well have
bought the scent of perfumed blood.
Certain songs of times gone by
of young men dying in the trenches,
with only crumpled memories of home,
letters scented with Muguet,
signatures in carmine kisses.
The air is thick with shadowed secrets –
like the single rose she puts beside
her precious, priceless perfume,
darkly sacred as her memories.
She never charged conscripted men,
forgets she died in 1924.

Gargouille
by Lydia Prime

On a biting November morning, frost coated grass crunched somewhere off in the distance. Faint, but still, I could hear definite steps crunching – quickening. I opened my eyes to check for whatever signs I could. If something was here, I needed to warn them. I stared out towards the redwood trees and watched as the wind whipped through the orange leaves. The branches not only swayed – but shivered. ‘Something’s coming,’ I thought, ‘I can feel it nearing…’ I moved ever so slightly, with just enough ease that no one would notice. I saw far beyond the wall of flaming branches and tried to focus on who or what was there. CRUNCH-CRUNCH-CRUNCH. No longer on frosted grass, but the fallen leaves that covered the forest floor. Whatever was there was still too far away to tell what sort of danger was looming just past the light.
The day began to fade and I still had no knowledge of what creature could have escaped the pit. I was, however, certain that it knew not only that I was there, but that I was watching. I continued to see its energy pulsing from the forest’s shadows. It’s waiting – but for what? I did not yet know. As the night began to cover the world in a somewhat peaceful sleep, my yellow eyes still scanned the tree line for the lurker. I was growing more concerned by the minute – I had heard a rumble and a crack not too long ago. Whatever was waiting before had unquestionably regrouped – something truly diabolical was headed this way. I began to sense them closing in, now in a pair, the original stepped into my sight with a new-found confidence. “Well, hello Gargouille.” He’d smirked and I cringed as he said my name.
“Surgat!” I roared. I should have known, “Who is with you, Demon?” I demanded. A demon whose sole purpose was to find ways to open doors and portals – even into mortals – was not one I wanted hanging around long. The accomplice emerged from the tree line. “Mephestopheles!” I shouted. I spread my wings and began my howling to alert everyone and anyone who could hear me, of the impending doom approaching. The other gargoyles joined in with my cries, and the two demons dropped to the ground before suddenly seeking refuge deep in the forest. Immediately after I stopped screaming, I looked around the trees. No sign of them, but I could hear something on the wind.
 “We’re coming, Gargouille.”

Open House
by Melissa R. Mendelson

The house was warm and inviting.  A gentle breeze slipped in through the open door and windows, dancing around the people inside.  The walls were light and sunny, carrying memories of loved ones and friends, moments painted with a touch of laughter and a hint of sadness.  Children wearing suits and dresses chased each other around and up the stairs, but as my shadow fell across the stairs, darkness entered the house.
For some reason, I could not move up the stairs.  I could not chase after the children, whose laughter should have warmed my heart.  I shuddered instead.  A hand touched my elbow, but when I looked, no one was there.  Still, it remained, leading me down the hall toward the kitchen, where everyone gathered, but I stopped by the basement door.  And then I headed down the steps and disappeared into the darkness.
The basement seemed ordinary.  The windows were small and dirty.  Furniture was covered with long, ugly white sheets.  The floor was kissed with both dust and mold.  There were no monsters here.  Still, I was pressed further toward the back, and then it was like I became a puppet, clawing at the brick wall before me until the bricks came loose, crashing to the floor.  And I peered into the abyss, discovering a hidden room with weird items such as an ancient, red book and a large, black bottle of liquid, but it was the skull that bothered me.  I burst into tears for that skull was me.

World’s End
by Ela Lourenco

World’s End – the high-end hotel which was the hunting ground of many a lecherous tycoon or director on the prowl for the numerous young aspiring starlets in town. Scantily clad girls barely old enough to be out past bedtime all powdered and buffed, vying for the attentions of men who could change their lives with one word.
There is nothing here anymore. Nothing but the lingering scent of desperation and expensive perfume mingling with the heavy dust in the air. Dreams and hopes are caught in the many shroud-like spider webs blanketing the hand-carved wooden furniture.
This is where it all began – the contagion. Born of the sins of man, the virus spread like wild-fire, decimating every living human in its wake. Hollywood was unpopulated within the day. By the end of the week there were only a handful of survivors left on the planet.
I am one of those ‘survivors’, blessed with immunity to this disease, cursed to continue my existence on this desolate place that is Earth.

Spiders in the Blood
by A.F. Stewart

Dozens of tiny spider corpses littered the marble floor and the velvet draped table, scattered across a half-filled glass decanter and the adjacent black rose. A murdered multitude of eight-legged creatures, drawn in by deadly magic.
The high-heeled click of footsteps sounded as Illyana entered, and a half-naked man tied to a chair squirmed, trying to scream through his gag. She ignored him, and the muffled noises he made, casting her glances at the arachnid husks.
“Such small things, but so precious.” She brushed a finger against some of the dead creatures, before opening the decanter. As the pungent perfume of its strange elixir wafted, Illyana scooped up dead spiders, depositing them into the liquid. Body by body, until each lifeless arachnid floated in her red elixir. She swirled the mixture, letting the bugs marinate. As she churned, their tiny legs twitched.
She laughed. “Round and round you go, my darlings.”
Illyana turned to the man, ripping off his duct tape gag to his scream of pain.
“What kind of crazy are you, lady?!”
“The worst kind, I’m afraid.” She yanked his head back by his hair and ordered, “Open your mouth!” His lips parted as if by her will, and she poured the spider laced liquid down his throat, commanding, “Swallow!”
Moaning and sputtering he did just that, ingesting the spider infested elixir until not a drop remained. The man groaned, reddish spittle drooling down his chin.
“What did you make me do?” His body shuddered, and he gagged. She smiled as his body convulsed, and the clock ticked down the silent minutes until he stopped shaking.
Illyana slithered her fingers over his arm. “Can you feel it beginning? Does your blood burn? With a sensation of creatures crawling in your veins?”
“Sick, I feel sick.” He gagged repeatedly, his chest heaving against the constraining ropes. They both watched as his skin rippled from underneath.
The man screeched, “What did you do to me!”
Illyana moved behind him. “Your blood will incubate my children. To be born from earthly spiders and my magic, consuming their host as they grow. I’ve given you a great honour.” Slowly an exoskeleton limb slid down his chest and fangs grazed his cheek.
His frightened whisper slipped out, “What are you?”
“Call me the Spider Queen,” she replied, her voice now hoarse and hissing. Her eight eyes glistened and another limb wrapped around his throat. Her sandpaper tongue licked his face and he screamed.

Nana’s Doll
by Stacey Turner

Jenna wasn’t alarmed when she first saw the new doll her stepdaughter carried. She merely asked where she’d gotten it, and Sophie had told her Nana, her mother’s mother, had given it to her during her last visit. She didn’t begin to wonder about it until Sophie started acting strangely. She’d hear her conversing softly only to find her alone when she entered the room. Alone, except for the doll. Sophie began shooting her guilty looks from under her bangs every time Jenna interrupted one of these “conversations.” The child began to haggard and startled at the slightest noise. Pete hadn’t noticed, of course, and insisted Sophie was fine. It was probably allergies and she always took a while to settle after a visit with his deceased wife’s family.
Jenna wasn’t scared at all until the day she heard whispers in Sophie’s room. She rounded the corner and stopped abruptly. Sophie wasn’t there, but the doll sat on the bed, smiling in Jenna’s direction.
“’Scuse me,” Sophie said as she brushed past Jenna in the doorway. Jenna’s heart skipped a beat.
“Soph, can I talk to you?” Jenna asked. Sophie nodded and made to scoop the doll from the bed. “Um, no. Alone.” Jenna stared pointedly at the doll. Sophie glanced at it as though asking permission before reluctantly preceding Jenna into the hall.
“What’s going on, Sophie?”
The child peered down at her socks. “What do you mean?”
“You don’t look like you’re sleeping very well, and sometimes I hear you talking to your doll.”
Sophie glanced up, her face filled with alarm. “Can you hear what we’re saying?”
“No. Why?” Jenna’s heart was racing, fear rolled off Sophie in waves.
“She doesn’t like you,” she whispered.
“Why?” It never crossed Jenna’s mind it might be strange to be asking a doll’s motives.
“Because you aren’t my mother. But that’s okay. I like you, Jenna. I love you and I don’t want you to be hurt,” she cried, flinging herself into Jenna’s arms.
“It’s okay, Soph.” Jenna consoled the little girl. “I’ll take care of this.”
An hour later she waved goodbye to Sophie as she left for a playdate with one of her friends. For the first time in months, the doll was not in her arms. And the smile on Sophie’s face was all the proof she needed. Entering the bedroom, she sat on the bed, and fixed her gaze on the doll.
“It’s time you and I had a chat, dearie. This house isn’t big enough for two witches and I was here first.”

Morbid Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis occurs every day as caterpillars become sweet fluttering butterflies, tadpoles become gorgeous frog princes and chameleons become one with the beauty of nature – but you won’t find any of that here.

The transformations you’re about to witness are unnatural, sometimes gruesome and deeply psychological. They will make you question reality and take your mind places it was never meant to go.

The True Tale of Goldilocks
by Ela Lourenco

Goldilocks, of creamy skin and flaxen hair
Goldilocks, young girl, so innocent and fair
Stumbled upon an empty cottage in the forest
Hungry and tired, stopped a while to rest.
Dust covered furniture, mouldy and rotten
In this desolate place time had forgotten
Ignoring common sense, she laid down to rest
Knowing not she was in the nest
Of creatures of the night – the ones from nightmares
Putrid ghouls – to catch unawares
and feast upon the purest souls
That would be their only goal.
To roam the Earth sight unseen
To find innocent essence for their queen
In this tale, there are no three bears
No porridge, mis-sized beds or chairs
She did not escape, well fed and rested
For as she slept, her spirit was infested
With fear and hatred and blood lust so deep
Her spirit its light no longer could keep.
Ravaged and pillaged, her soul decayed
Ghouls howled with glee as they played
With the shiny new toy they had clawed away
Leaving behind an empty shell of decay.
