Marian
K.R. Morrison

Marian stared listlessly out of the bus window as her ride lurched along the rutted forest road. Just one more dull trip home after a dull day at work. She sighed; nothing interesting ever happened to her.
As the bus rattled toward her stop, she noticed that ice was beginning to build up on the outside of the windows.
Odd, she thought. This doesn’t happen this time of year.
Although it was fall, there had been no signs of the coming winter. In fact, it had been unusually warm this year, causing most folks to regret having ever complained about the winter rains.
She shrugged it off and pulled the cord for her corner. The driver applied the brakes, and the ancient machine squealed to a stop.
Marian stood and gathered her coat and purse. As she did so, she squinted out into the forest through which she would soon be walking.
“You’re not actually going out there, are you?” asked someone across the aisle from her.
Marian looked over at the speaker, an ancient woman swathed in bright garments. She gave her a puzzled look.
“Why wouldn’t I? This is my usual stop.” Marian had no idea why she felt that she had to inform this—gypsy?—of any information whatsoever. She’d never seen the old lady before, and doubted she ever would again.
“These woods,” the old lady said as she pointed outside, “are the domain of the great owl Athene. Tonight she is restless, hunting those who would dare to trespass on her grounds.”
“Athene.” Marian shook her head. In a snide voice she asked, “And just who is this ‘Athene’? Someone’s maiden auntie?”
A voice came from behind her. “I’d listen to the old hag if I were you.”
Marian turned her head to see a young man slouched down in his seat. He was almost as colorfully-dressed as the woman. Another stranger. Another gypsy.
She arched an eyebrow. “Oh? And why is that?”
“Granny always knows these things,” he drawled. “If she says Athene is out and about, it’s almost always true.”
Marian looked around, noticing for the first time that practically all of the riders were similarly dressed. She felt as if she had somehow become part of a gypsy caravan. And they were all looking at her with concerned faces.
“What?” she nearly shouted. “I live in these woods, and I don’t know an Athene anybody.”
“Goddess of darkness,” one of the riders informed her. “Greek.”
“Well, this isn’t Greece, so that sort of thing doesn’t hold water with me.” She took one last look around and stormed off the bus.
As it pulled away, the riders stared out the windows at her, alarm in their eyes. Some shook their heads and made some sort of weird sign with their hands. She stared back, then blinked the exhaust out of her eyes. When she looked again, they had all changed—the people were the usual crowd on her bus ride.
What the…?
She decided that she had fallen asleep and was just now truly waking up. But even if she had been dreaming…still…?
Now Marian’s curiosity was up. She decided that she couldn’t take one more step without checking out this information, so she pulled out her phone.
“To the Internet!”
It didn’t take long to find what she needed to know. It seemed that the owl had had a special place in Greek mythology. From engravings on coins to a position as guardian of the Acropolis, this bird was everywhere.
“Stupid feathered pests,” Marian grumbled. She checked another web page.
“Here’s something interesting.” She read an article on the owl’s association with Lilith, the mythical first wife of Adam, who had refused him and had been cursed to become a vampire.
This appealed to her goth attitude. Oh, to be a creature of the night—minus feathers of course—and to haunt the world for eternity! The idea of it spoke to her in words that made her heart leap.
She heard a dog barking from a long ways off.
“Styx!” she muttered. “Stupid dog. I’m coming already!”
She stalked off into the edge of the woods, wondering why someone in her stupid family couldn’t manage to feed her dumb dog while she was away.
Thoughts of Athene returned, calming her thoughts.
I wonder…
“Here, owlie, owlie, owlie!” she called, only half joking.
Styx’s barking was getting louder. Marian exhaled a sharp, frustrated sigh.
“Athene!” she called out. “I ask you to show yourself! Be quick about it, before my stupid mutt gets here!”
Her own voice sounded stupid—what a dumb thing to do, she thought. There was no Athene, no Lilith—probably some owls, but…
Suddenly there was a whoosh of wings, and Marian found herself falling onto her back. The autumn leaves broke her fall, so at least she wouldn’t have bruises the next day.
Damn!
She had only enough time to sit up and curse when the wings came at her again.
Athene! She was sure of it!
The owl, which indeed it was, took one last swipe at her and landed gracefully on the ground a couple of paces away. As Marian looked on in wonder, the owl transformed into the most beautiful, voluptuous woman she had ever seen. Even though Marian considered herself definitely planted on the heterosexual side of things, the vision before her made her seriously consider batting for the other team, just this once.
The woman stalked toward her. “You called?”
The voice was a siren song to Marian’s ears, and she rose from her seat among the leaves. “Athene?”
The woman shook her head, and her black tresses waved around her perfect face. “Lilith.”
Marian had very little time to be impressed. Less than the time it took to widen her eyes, Lilith had launched herself at her. In even less time, Marian was a lifeless pile of flesh.
Styx found her that night, and they buried her a few days later.
The night after that, Marian was at her bus stop, waiting for her midnight snack. She bared her fangs in a ghastly smile, knowing that Styx would feed well on the corpses.

Graft
by Sonora Taylor

Emmaline made her way into the forest. A trail of blood followed her footsteps. She’d long given up on trying to stop the bleeding. What was more important was getting the arm to the tree before it could fester.
Emmaline found the arm in a bar, a popular place to find wayward men looking for a way home with her. She saw their limbs and the branches of their fingers, and saw a way to give back to the forest. The arms of men removed the trees’ branches. It only seemed fair to replant the trees with skin and bone.
Emmaline made it to her favorite tree: a squat, fat, blackened tree that she used to lean against when reading as a girl. She shared her secrets with the tree, and when the wind blew through the leaves, she knew the tree was answering her. It was the tree who first whispered, Bring me skin. Emmaline first hung animal skins on the branches, as she’d read that people once did. It wasn’t enough. The tree needed limbs.
The wooden branches reached into the sky, and the limbs of flesh hung limp against the bark. The graft would be slow to take, but Emmaline trusted that soon, the tree would recognize the skin as gifts. She brought the arm to a bare patch on the side of the tree. She nailed the limb to the tree, then smeared its blood against the wood in the hopes that the tree would understand.
Emmaline was bitten by the tree. She snapped back her hand and looked at her palm. A fresh splinter lay deep in her skin. It hurt when Emmaline pressed it, but like the tree would grow used to the skin, Emmaline knew she’d grow used to the wood. She saw it as a gift from the tree – a recognition of their oneness, and how they would trade wood for flesh, flora for fauna.
Emmaline left the splinter in her hand as she left the woods. She promised the tree that she would return soon. She smiled as a breeze blew through the leaves and parted her hair.

The Crow’s Gift

When seeking gifts from others, the greatest gift is often a connection. A lonely fourth grader finds an unlikely friendship with a murder of crows. A college student tries, against all odds, to meet her favorite author. A commuter sees a stranger every day on her way to work. And a man who lives alone in the woods seeks a connection with anyone, so long as they’re another body to hold.

The greatest gifts, however, don’t always mean the greatest rewards. The fourth grader learns that a crow’s idea of loyalty may challenge her own. The college student learns that in a battle between herself and fate, neither may be the victor. The commuter never learns her new friend’s name, which may be a gift in itself. The man in the woods sees any connection as a reward — though not necessarily for those he seeks.

Connections with others keep us afloat, in varying degrees and at varying costs. As the man in the woods so aptly says, “We all want closeness and companionship. Some of us just gain that by burying people in the floorboards.”

An Unkindness of Ravens
by Stacey Turner

The dream was always the same: Elin stood in the dusky, moonlit forest, clothed in a white flowing gown. Heavy, feathered wings sprouted from her shoulder blades, though she was unsure how they worked. As she pondered both her surroundings and herself, large, black ravens began to appear, alighting on nearby branches. Swooping low from behind, to perch on the limbs of adjacent trees, they formed a circle around her. Once surrounded, the cacophony of their caws sounded more and more like speech and less like the cries of simple birds. They stared accusingly with cold, hard, black eyes, unflinching in their directness. She knew she had nothing to be ashamed of, nothing to hide, but still she fought not to shrink from their combined gaze. What could they possibly want from her?
As one, the birds lifted from their perches, whirling, dervish like, into the night sky, coalescing into a great, fluid line. They flew straight up, looped, then dived, buzzing Elin so she dropped to the ground in sudden fright. Recovering, she rose and followed them, pulled by some vague intuition she could feel deep in her belly, but couldn’t have named. Still unsure how to use the wings, she walked through the woods gracelessly, longing to soar as the ravens were. They halted in the middle of a darker part of the forest, lighting on the tree branches in a circle again. Elin stumbled into the center, noticing a single raven also stood on the ground. It hopped over to a tree and paused between the roots. It pecked rapidly at the ground while she looked on, confused. The others cawed from the trees, the noise deafening. She lifted her hands to her ears, but as she covered them, she realized they were actually pronouncing the same word over and over: “help.”
Without stopping to wonder at the birds’ communication skills, she dug frantically where the raven indicated. The first bone lie only a few inches beneath the surface. Horrified, yet oddly calm, she stopped and sat back on her heels. “”Help,” the raven beside her said again.
“Yes,” Elin answered. “I will get help.” Ripping a strip from the hem of her gown, she tied it around the tree so she’d be able to find the spot again with the police. “I’ll be back,” she promised the ravens and turned to go.
Shrill ringing stung her ears and she reached out instinctively with her left hand to silence the noise. She opened her eyes to her sunlit bedroom, the dark forest far behind, along with the ravens, the angel wings, and the bones. Rubbing her face, she sighed. God, the dreams were so intense. Her shoulders even ached, and her shoulder blades itched where the wings had been. Scratching absentmindedly, she threw back the covers and flung her legs over the side of the bed. She clamped a hand over her mouth to stifle her startled gasp. Lying on the sheet were two feathers: one jet black, the other pure white.

Everlasting Portrayal
by Elizabeth H. Smith

The ancient wall stood like new, the intricate design’s paint still vibrant and without wear. We approached with caution, shined our lights over its beautiful design. I placed my palm against the golden canvas, found it hot to the touch. Something thrived there, old yet youthful. Its vigor resonated within the stone behind the artful and mysterious depiction.
I knew fear rested in my heart, but there it stayed; it had no influence, no power.
The floor rumbled. I watched my companions flee. But I stayed.
The illustration came to life, the wall bending and stretching as flesh. A rancid breath came from the animated image, filling my lungs with fire. From the pain I screamed, but not from fear—my body writhed but my soul was calm. Terror remained within my heart, which held strong against the flames consuming me from the inside out.
Before the eyes burned out of my skull, I stared once more at the perfect art—alive and everlasting.

Awakening
by Tawny Kipphorn

My memory of her fades more each time the storm passes through, leaving her ghostly essence behind in its wake. Every day she would gaze into the flames while mumbling something about an endless darkness, and although she was right in front of me, it was clear she was many miles away, far beyond where I could ever go. It was as if there were an invisible veil cocooning her, and try as anyone might, no one could break through its ethereal armor. That night, she wandered out as the rain poured down, making her way deep into the woods. I followed behind her, making sure to keep my distance. As I knelt down deep into the darkness, I watched in horror as her body contorted at different angles. A beaming light materialized from above and moved quickly into her, and an agonizing scream escaped her lips into the dead of night as she slumped down onto the wet earth. I looked around the pitch black woods as if somehow I could make sense of what I’d just seen, but when I glanced back in her direction, she was gone. As I began to walk towards where I’d just seen her, I felt a violent vibration travel up through my feet and into the rest of my body. A strong surge that brought me to my knees, and I cried tears of pain and happiness. It was in that moment that I realized I had not only just witnessed death, but rebirth as well. I walked away from the memory of her, the death of my former self. I walked into the new me, the one with the gift of third You sight. As I continue to linger between the realms, she has disappeared from my mind, but I always remember the darkness that stared back at me through the flames.

Our Bianca’s Hand
by Marge Simon

Our Bianca,
a monster, a moron,
unlikely choice for symbiont,
yet she meets our needs.
In time, she grows too old
to serve us properly.
We select a young man
to assist our plans.
He’s strong, but lacking wits,
and his passion grows
as we reveal our beauty.
He bends easily to our will,
and grasps us tenderly
when our Bianca dies.
At the house of the insane
he finds another like her
with no volition of its own.
He removes the useless things
that dangle from its wrists,
applies a clump of spider webs
to staunch the flow of life.
Afterward, he wipes the blade
and places it beside the bed.
We join again to human arms,
signal him when it is done,
with delicate caresses
and promises of love.

The Ravening
by Lori R. Lopez

I
They gathered at the dawn of a ghostly day,
The sleek black-and-blue Frightmongers
Dressed in their Mourning Tails. Indeed it was
A funeral as this brood of solemn birds
Collected to discuss the demise of Nature.
The world had turned grim and shrouded
At all hours. Forlorn and gray. A dismal setting
Of mythic and gothic proportion.
While they favored such an atmosphere,
It was not the way things should be.
“’Tis the time,” croaked an elder.
“Let it be done!” grated a massive flock.
Wings spread, they rose in unison.
Clans from every corner returned home
To impart the widespread conclusion.
Carry out Death’s judgement,
The punishing toll of
Ignoring signs, overlooking pleas for mercy
From guileless hearts, countless faces.
Children of the earth and water.
II
They arrived in numbers, a dark fleet.
A bleak wave of ballistic divebombers.
Stormclouds of consequence; an ill wind.
Obsidian orbs peeled, expressions dour.
Sailing above barren forest graveyards
Leveled by flame, sheared by axe.
Choking on soot or ash, a toxic breeze.
Eyeing with compassion
The stagnant lakes and streams.
Hooded Reapers toting scythe-beaks,
Don’t-mess-with-me mouths.
Swooping from the heavens,
Sharp-eyed and hawkish,
To rain a fury of toothless bites,
Savage talons; indignant plumage ruffled.
The Ravening is upon us!
Vengeful and teeming, chaotic and brutal.
“None are innocent,” quoth they,
“And the penance is blood.” In the end,
A few feathers would be shed . . .
Black and blunt, white and long —
For they did not swoop down alone.

Lucy
by Naching T. Kassa

Faint moonlight worked a patchwork of light and shadow as it streamed between the trees. I moved over the forest floor, my feet silenced by pine needles. Mina was not as soundless as I. Leaves rustled and sighed in her wake.
I didn’t need sound to track her. The cool, night breeze carried the mingled scents of lavender, the lover we shared, and her blood.
As she led me through the maze of forest, my teeth grew long and sharp. The darkness grew brighter as instinct brought my nocturnal vision to bear. Soon my pale limbs and diaphanous gown transformed into mist. I floated after Mina, stopping only when she reached a small clearing.
Though corrupted by the blood of our lover, life still dwelled within Mina’s thin form. Why my lover had not yet turned her, I did not know. He was Master of the Night, right hand to the Prince of Darkness—not a slave to the softer passions. No chamber of his heart could contain an ounce of love for her.
Or me.
He had warned me away from her. Said she belonged to him. What was it that made her special? Was it the blood?
I had to taste it.
My quarry had reached a clearing and here, she stopped. I secreted myself behind the trunk of an elm and from this vantage point, observed her. She stood with her back toward me.
Something screamed in the night air above us. I glanced up, my eyes catching a glint of silver among the treetops. Then, it vanished.
Assuming a corporeal form, I broke from the forest. My footsteps were those of a ghost as I crossed the clearing.
No human, not even a half-bred one, could’ve sensed my presence. Her warmth radiated, her blood surged. Another step and I would savor the sweet rush of it.
Before I could take the step, she bent backward. Her upturned eyes gazed into mine as she twisted.
I paused.
Her lips parted at the sight of me. My mouth watered when I detected fear in her eyes.
She screamed, a strange high-pitched sound.
I looked up too late.
The falcon burst out of the trees and swept over Mina’s body. Silver-tipped talons gleamed. They slashed at my face. Flesh tore and cold blood dripped. The scream became my own.
I fell to the ground.
Footsteps receded.
I’ve been on my hands and knees for hours now. The damned bird ripped out my nose and my eyes. They’re healing though. Mina’s scent is on the wind.
And, there’s a yellow glow in the sky.

Stained Glass
by E.A. Black

She wandered through the abandoned house, undisturbed in her sadness. Moonlight shined on her cobalt blue stained glass arms, reflecting a rainbow of colors against the walls. Her glass body chinged as she walked across the parquet floor to the back door. The sound of wind chimes accompanied her when she moved.  She was both the night and the breeze that tousled your hair.
Trapped in the stained glass living room window by day, she freed herself when the sun set because the light held her captive. She meandered through thickets and along the stream that ran behind the house in search of… she wasn’t sure what. Maybe she sought a truth that lay beyond all that lead and tinted glass. Some say she haunted the house. She only haunted herself.
What would happen if she stayed outside until dawn? She yearned to watch the sun rise. Oh, for something different to happen. Her days were the same no matter what she did. Wander empty halls, look out broken windows, wander the woods, cry in a plaintive voice no one heard.
Or so she thought.
By the time sunrise kissed the horizon, she was too far from the house to make it safely back. She stood on a cliff with the forest behind her, watching the sky brighten as day broke. The rising sun warmed her face and arms, and she closed her eyes and smiled at the pleasant sensation.
Then, the burning began. Vivid cobalt blue faded. Vibrant reds and mossy greens washed out. The colors fled her body and reappeared in the trees, leaves, sky, and water. She was nothing but clear air and an outline of lead. Screaming, she backed up, desperate to hide in the forest.
Hands grabbed her shoulders and yanked her from behind. She felt rough bark on her back as the tree’s branches wrapped around her. A voice whispered in her ear.
“We’ve been waiting for you. You’re one of us now.”
She faded into the tree, leaving only her confused expression on the trunk and outstretched oak arms reaching for the sky. From now on, her curse was that she faced east and would watch the sun rise each morning, trapped inside wood instead of glass, able to wander no more.

Zippered Flesh 3

What horror anthology on body enhancements wouldn’t include gross-out fiction? This book has it in spades. But, this collection of stories goes far beyond that. Here you will also find science fiction, surreal fiction, fantasy, and even a full serving of dark humor. Disturbing, perverse, often gut-wrenching (pun intended) stories—all between the covers of this anthology!
Nineteen chilling tales by some of the best horror and suspense writers today. Definitely not for the squeamish!

“Hardcore horror that ranges from the socially relevant to the scatologically repulsive—the shock here is like ‘The Scream’ made flesh.” — Mort Castle, editor of On Writing Horror: A Handbook by the Horror Writers Association

“In Zippered Flesh 3, Editor Weldon Burge has done a masterful job of combining work from well-known masters like Jack Ketchum and Graham Masterton with newer writers. But it is the original work by newcomers like L.L. Soares and Meghan Acuri that stands out for me. … Highly recommended.” — Gene O’Neill, author of The Hitchhiking Effect: A Retrospective Collection

“‘Closer by Charles Colyott is a wonderfully poignant and romantic story. … ‘Going Green’ by Christine Morgan is so original, timely, and well-written it deserves special mention. … Kudos to Burge for putting together another fine anthology of cutting-edge fiction.” — Paul Dale Anderson, author of The Instruments of Death series
