Write Her Story
The rule of the universe is feed or bleed. So it has been. So shall it ever be.
Dark Lady, ageless in beauty and infinite in wisdom, knew the rule. Cawdor Thane believed in it.
Thane walked the earth as though he were a god demanding worship. Dark Lady wouldn’t bend a knee to such as he.
When he called her to the tower, she did not come for his sake. She came at destiny’s call.
Four cloaked magicians accompanied Dark Lady as she entered the fortress. Small wounds marked three pricked thumbs. Only one remained unblemished.
At the top of the stronghold, three of the witches halted outside the primary chamber. Dark Lady entered the room, attended only by the fourth, and found Thane standing before a wall of glass. He didn’t turn when she entered.
“Did I win?” he asked.
“No,” she replied.
“You said I would.”
“I didn’t.”
Thane slammed a fist against the window. “You did. You said, ‘The victor will stand over the vanquished while a raven consumes his entrails.’ ”
“You are not the victor.”
He turned, his face scarlet.
“Do you see that flag down there? The raven is my standard. The eagle belongs to the enemy. See how they dwindle?” He crossed to her and his fetid breath warmed her face. “I conquer and I cannot die.”
“Death comes for you.”
“How? Only one not of woman born can harm me.”
“You are the vanquished. Meet the victor.”
Dark Lady’s companion threw off his cloak. Duff, the avenger, stood in the magician’s place. Sword raised, he rushed forward and pierced the black heart.
Thane fell. When he hit the floor, Dark Lady transformed. Wings raised, she leaped upon him.
Thane bled.
Hecate fed.
