Post-apocalyptic fiction can take many forms and exists within a subgenre of science fiction. It deals with the end of civilization and that end can come from an almost infinite combination of events. All of those causes must culminate in an existential catastrophe and can vary from an impact event to extraterrestrial attack to dysgenics or even divine judgment. Quite simply, something happens that impacts a civilization to the point that it collapses.
From the fallout of a nuclear event, to weather patterns transforming the landscape, to a desolate wasteland, to a mutated virus that causes the dead to walk the earth again; post-apocalyptic fiction is incredibly diverse. That diversity opens the door for a multitude of fans which only helps to propel its popularity into even higher realms.
But what is it about post-apocalyptic fiction that draws us so closely to it? Perhaps it’s a sense of morbid curiosity. Society’s DNA is thoroughly infected with the rubbernecking gene. If something bad happens, a natural disaster or a tragic event, one can fairly accurately assume that a large sub sect of the populace will seek out information on it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that following the news is a bad thing; what I’m saying is that the adversity we see on the news has almost become a source of entertainment for some. Please keep in mind that as I say this I am a firm believer that not all entertainment is meant to be pleasurable. Even the definition of that has been twisted.
