A Witch Scorned
by Stacey Turner

Sable popped one of the spiders from the table in her mouth, savoring the sour tang and satisfying crunch. So good, she thought. But too many on the lips, eternity on the hips. She giggled. It wouldn’t do to lose her figure. Keeping Victor’s attention was challenging. She glanced at the single black rose lying beside her favorite decanter. There was a time, not so long ago, that one rose would have been a dozen, the spiders’ home a heart shaped box instead of a dime store bag. She sighed. His desire for her had surely gone cold. He’d become distant and she wondered if he’d strayed.
The private investigator she’d hired had dropped off a large manila envelope and collected the rest of his fee. She knew what that meant, but still she hesitated. Opening the parcel meant finding the truth. And once known, it could not be un-known and action would be necessary. Why did things always have to end? Her stomach was in knots and she regretted eating the spider. Best to just do it, like ripping off a bandage. She opened the missive and scanned the contents.  A collection of photos slipped to the floor as the envelope fell from her shaking hands. She’d anticipated the worst, but not…no…nothing like this. Sadness quickly gave way to anger, and anger to rage.
She roared out her anguish and the lights above her dressing table flickered than burst. A gust of wind circled the bedroom, knocking over the bookcase and ripping curtains from the windows, the comforter from the bed. As suddenly as the storm began it ended. She stilled her fury and her power. Her gaze focused on the decanter, her favorite poison preserved inside. But no, she thought. No. She would not be easy on him as she’d planned. Instead, death would be slow and painful. So very painful. How dare he? How. Dare. He. To lose interest she could accept. Love is fickle, she knew this. She’d been left before and would be again. You couldn’t live for millennia without going through a few lovers. But to leave her for a human? A goddamn mortal? A flesh bag? It was not to be endured. She’d planned to end him, running in to old lovers too awkward to tolerate, but now she would annihilate him. A human, she snorted, indeed.

Morbid Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis occurs every day as caterpillars become sweet fluttering butterflies, tadpoles become gorgeous frog princes and chameleons become one with the beauty of nature – but you won’t find any of that here.

The transformations you’re about to witness are unnatural, sometimes gruesome and deeply psychological. They will make you question reality and take your mind places it was never meant to go.
